looking for a cheap .22 revolver

I don't even have my restricted license yet but i would still like to look around and figure out what I want so that I can place an order the day i receive my card :redface:


my budget would be $400-500, the revolver can be any length just as long as its accurate, well balanced and has a nice light trigger pull on both Da and Sa, a large grip would be a nice bonus but not necessary

so what should i be looking at?
 
a used S&W would probably the best quality you can get for that amount of money, plus i'm sure any replacement parts/grips would be decently easy to get.
 
X2 for the model 17.I recently bought a really nice old model 17 for 450.Its the classic 22 revolver and much nicer than a Taurus will ever be.They come up for sale fairly frequently here on the EE

The other .22 revolver that has a huge following of enthusiastic users is the Ruger Single Six. However if you've done your google-fu homework you'll know that it is a single action with loading and unloading done through a flip open gate on the right side ala old western shooters. A bit slower for access but not by much.

A search of "taurus" here at CGN will bring up enough tales of woe about parts and service for the Taurus line that I'm not considering any of them for my own purchasing. You may want to look at the various threads on that and make your own mind up on this brand. Mind you another way of looking at it is that it's "only a .22 so what could go wrong?". YMMV on that....

I know you said revolver but are you dead set against a semi auto? Both Rugers and Brownings can be had in variations brand new that will fit nicely in your budget.

The Ruger Standard Auto, Mark I, II or III, have always had an excellent reputation for reliability and accuracy. My Dad has has a Mk II Govt Model (6 7/8 bull barrel) and it's a tack driver.

However, if you have your heart set on a revolver, S&W is the big dog of the breed. Or you could gamble and buy one of the Tauruses, Astras or H&R revolvers that seem to crop up with regularity. I'm interested in one of the H&R variants myself only because I want a budget top-break revolver and I don't have a .22 LR pistol yet
