...Hey guys I want a coach gun but I am low on funds for the foreseeable future:(
I want to know if I can cut a SxS with 30" barrels down to say 20" or even 18.5" to create a "bubba coach". I know where I stand regarding the legality, just need to know if it can be done successfully with no nasty side effects and will it still shoot slugs?

Please note this is a cheap find and it is claimed to be in pretty rough shape, I truly feel the urge to purchase and "Bubba" this old sea hag and any negative comments would hurt my feelings for sure but will never stop me!!! :p

The barrels are unlikely to shoot to the same point of aim after cutting. they will still be separated by the mid rib at 20" and so are likely to cross- fire with slugs. If you notice the original barrels are parallel for the last 8-10" or so of their length, that final alignment is why double shotguns can shoot to the same point of impact with barrels that are wider at the breech than the muzzle. Cutting is a bad idea unless all you want to do is blast with shot ( not slugs) and at VERY close range.

...That kind of info is why I love this place. :) Yes Longwalker the intended use for this shotgun would be close range max 15-20 yards and I had definitely hoped to shoot slugs "minute of pie plate" to that distance. I have yet to hold the shotgun in my hands but I think I understand your logic behind the convergence issue. I will have to research it more. Perhaps someone has actually shortened a side by side before? :confused:

Win/64 the shotgun pictured is a cold war era Baikal I believe. I am very green when it comes to break action shotguns in any configuration.
I have always wanted one though, and a project beater is aboot all I can afford presently.

I would want to make sure that stock was "sound" before I did anything with that gun. Especially shoot it. I see at least 3 repairs.
 
...price definitely reflects condition and yes the stock issue would need to be addressed. You can probably guess why I would choose something like this for a project. I swear I never "Bubba'd" a firearm that didn't deserve it!!!, some actually BEGGED for it :p

My friend has a Stoeger Coach gun with 20'' barrels and its shoots slugs like ####. Defintly not a slug gun by any means.
One time, I had my .22 resetting target set up down range at about 25 yards, and after shooting the .22 for a while, I took the coach gun and fired a slug at a paper target about a foot to the right of my .22 target. Put the bead on the centre of the paper and Bang! and down goes my .22 target.

I've got a rough Parker Brothers sxs that the barrels were cut from 30" to 25". One barrel had an unrepairable crack just past that. I thought it might make a fun slug gun at that length so I had Dave Henry shorten it. I was very disappointed at the range. The group at 100 yards would have to have been measured in feet, and one barrel was a couple of feet left and the other a couple of feet right. If it was decently regulated I would have had sights mounted. Now, I wasn't planning to shoot it at an animal at 100 yards but even at 30 it likely would have wounded more often than killed. I'd never do that to a sxs that the barrels weren't toast though.
