I have a few Ishy FN's so ... I was wondering about getting the barrel chopped on one and making it into a CQB FN. Is there a minimum length with regards to
A)the CFC (this is already a &^#$$* prohib :kickInTheNuts:) and

B) to the ability to cycle the action reliably?

I was hoping to be able to get it chopped to an inch or so past the piston assembly.

Regards,

As long as the barrel ends beyond the existing gasblock, you are good to go as far as reliability. And even if it did cause an issue for any reason, the adjustable gas system will handle it. Guys in the US run short(er) barrels with the full length gas system with no problems.

There is one thing that is excellent about this plan, make sure that you have the 'smith who chops it (get it done at a 'smith) get a test and safety permit, and invite you to the range - then you'll get to shoot the F*cker!!!! - sides, it's an Ishy, even before they were prohib they were $150 out the door. (make sure the permit lasts all day, you have tons of ammo, you take a camera, and you gloat on CGN) Pretty soon half the FN's in the country will be chopped.

Oh yeah, Baby!

I'd say bubba would be proud of you...Please don't do it.

HA!HA! I have several Ishy's so doing a bubba with one is not a big deal. I promise it will be tasteful: no hacksaw and grinder will be used. I promise! :dancingbanana: I still haven't decided what camo pattern to paint it.. Viet Nam era Tigerstripe is cool as hell or maybe an Arid pattern of some sort.

As mentioned I am hoping to get it cut about an inch or so past the gas block... just enough to have a small space between the threaded end of the flash hider (maybe a YHM with a re-bar cutter?) and the handgaurds.

That's the plan! Yes they were cheap but hey...it's still an FN rifle! I love them and modding one out will be worth it!

Most deffinitely go for it, and be sure to post pics. The only thing left to do after that is to find a way to mount a para stock onto the (sorta) inch lower receiver.

I had my Ishy chopped. As said above, get a smith to do it and make sure he knows what he's doing. When chopping the barrel length he'll most likely need to enlarge the gas port in the barrel to compensate for the reduced pressure.
I'd recommend digging around on the FAL Files forum for a while, they have a lot of info there.
Further, if you're changing a lot of the other components on your gun, when (notice I didn't say "if") you get ticked at the inch-ish specs, don't be afraid to change out with a metric lower.

Chopping an FN

Wouldn'y you loose too much gas for it to function properly?
I have a few FN's but I sold off the beaters and kept the best.

I have some spare FN barrels in my shop that could be candidates for a chop job. I wouldn't mind having a chopped FN with a folding stock and a 30 round mag attached. I have a friend C2 bipod and I have a SAW bipod. A chopped FN with a C2 bipod as a set of hand guards.

If you do chop one we need pictures and if the gunsmith had to test it, and a range report.

With the prohibs.. If one had a range on their property, would you be allowed to fire them? I mean.. You don't need an ATT to take your rifle to your own house, do you?

Or have it chopped one centimeter at a time and take it to the range after each chop. Expensive but at least you would be shooting. Until you run out of barrel at which point you replace the barrel and start over.

Let me think...can you legally chop a barrel on something already prohibited?

I don't know. Does that make it MORE prohibitted? :)

If it is prohibitted for some other reason than barrel length and you shorten the barrel......hmmm.

UPDATE?

Ive also got a spare Ishapore and will do the same. Ive taken instiration from DSA on theeir carbine rifles, Duracoat is also very very cool....

OK - Question can someone please tell me if the L1A1 furniture can be swapped onto a Ishapore frame? What harware do I need" I only needto swap the butstock and pistol grip as my Ishy wood is yucky.
