I have a friend in Squamish who just started hunting, so he calls me up and says "I've seen lots of sign in this one place outside of town, come and help me find a buck" So I head out very early in the AM, to meet at an arranged spot.

I get this call on my cell phone when I am almost there. Buddy has been called in to work, he will meet me if he can get off. I am like "WTF?? I don't know where I am going" But he gives me directions and I figure what the heck, I am here anyway, so I'll give it a shot.

I glassed this clearing that he found for a few hours, and then was going to go try somewhere else, when I decided to try my new doe bleat can, purchased for the princely sum of $19 or so.

Almost instantly, I hear a grunt. No way!!

I keep at it, and there are more grunts, coming closer. I finally see some movement in a thick patch of willows, about 50 yards away.

The astonishing thing is that the wind is totally in his favour, it's at my back!! I bleat once more, and get ready.

He comes out of the willows and I am conflicted- He is no monster, but hunting has been tough this year...He makes the choice for me as he keeps getting closer and closer, and when he gets under 30 yards I feel the cat gave the mouse every sporting chance to get away, and the mouse can only run in front of the cat so many times...

He turns broadside and I plop the crosshairs behind the shoulder and touch off my 300WSM, sending a 130gr TTSX @ 3500 FPS.

He takes a step or 2 forward, then falls backward in a heap.

I just ate some of him for dinner and he was deliscious. I made the right choice!

He is a 3x3 with double brow tines. Pretty cool looking, it would have been great to see him in a few years, I bet he had great potential!

Bet your friend is wishing he hadn't answered the phone eh?

Nice buck, and very nice job on those steaks! (no one around my kneck of the woods understands what a properly cooked piece of meat looks like!)

X2!! Those steaks are just perfect! My mouth was watering while I looked. Thanks for sharing, Gate. Great work. Eagleye.

Congrats on a great looking blacktail (before & after) Gatehouse :D Having never taken one before and from what I've seen of those little coastal ghosts, I wouldn't have been so hesitant on the trigger ;)

Isn't that a fair sized blacktail?

It's a good size from the looks of it - sometimes they're a little slow developing their full rack. We shot a 3 pt a few years ago that was bigger than the 4 point another guy shot by a fair margin - sometimes it just seems to go that way.

i love the looks of those dark horned blacktails, need to get myself out to the coast sometime.

surprised that bullet didn't bounce off.
