I have been reading some shotgun shell load data...My question regards types of wads. For example if a load calls for a WAA12F114...WAA12 seems to be the most available type.. What is the difference?

Thanks

IIRC the WAA12 is for smaller loads, the F114 is for 1-1/4 oz and up. The shot cushion is generally the thing that's different. If they call for the F114, use the F114. Build it using the components specified.

The WAAF114 is designed for heavier field loads. Winchester has changed the designations for their wads and it is now the WT12.

Here's as link that might help.

Please note also that even if you do manage to squeeze it all in, and getting it to crimp, you stand a good chance that your pressure level is well above the safe limit. For instance if you use a tested load meant for the 12F114 wad, and then use a wAA12 wad, you have reduced the cap. of that hull, and therefore increased the pressure level. For shotshells, duplicate the load exactly as the manual shows.

Thanks for the replies

The data that I am looking at is for a

WinAA hull
525gr Lyman sabot slug
23 gr of Unique
WAA12F114 wad
Win 209 primer

I notice russells have a WT12

out of my 870 the Lyman slugs work great (IC barrel)
im' using WSF as a powder
and info out of the Lyman book over 100 fps faster using WSF :D

mark your reloads with a black marker SLUG so you don't wonder what in them later

Another idea might be to go to the IMR Powder Website and download their pdf on shotshell reloading. It has a lot of "safe" recipes.

More slug reloading questions

I am trying to find data for a slug load using Universal Clays a 1oz lee slug and AA hulls.

On the Hodgdon site when you choose a 1 oz lee slug it defaults to 1oz slugmaster... so do they consider that the same as a Lee slug?

Thanks

Re AA12- 114 wad

The aa 12f -114 wad is the yellow winchester field wad meant primarily for 1 1/4 ounces of shot and also was used for some 1 3/8 ounce shot loads in the old winchester guides. The Wt-12 wad ( orange in color) is not the same as the yellow field wad but is exactly like the white aa-12 wad. Winchester claims it is made of a lower cost plastic and was meant to compete price wise with the lower cost claybuster copies. Just to make things more confusing the older style yellow field wads aa12f-114 are quite a bit shorter than a bag of the newer yellow aa12f-114 that I have that are very close in length to the white aa12 wad.

The WAA12F114 (yellow) is taller than the WAA12 (white).

Also the cushoning effect is different too.

With the slug load you listed, don't use the white wad use the yellow.

Also, as good as Claybuster wads are, they get quite stiff in the winter and don't perform the same as the summer.

Changing wads can and will change the chamber pressures to dangerous regions.

I have the lee loading data that came with the mold, we shoot at the same range on different days so if you want a copy you just have to let me know and we can make a meet. If your really into watching the interesting I can let you know when I have the littleton shot maker going and you can swing by for a beer and listen to the chirping of the hot lead hitting the brake fluid in my cooling chamber.

Thanks Dave

I have the mold data...not sure how current it is..It gives data for HS6 WAA 12F 114 Wad..which has been discontinued.. The Winchester site states to use a WAA 12SL (pink) wad instead. I have tried the slugs with herco and they worked well..I have 3 lbs of Unique that I would like to use up instead of buying more powder..
