Wounded a running deer :-(

Easy to say when you have what 2 months to get a deer, becomes a little more pressing when in a lot of cases a guy 1 week to get her done

I can imagine :D

But i still tend to pass on longer running shots. That's just me tho.

(unless it's already hit of course. If it's been shot and it's leaving, i'll take a poke at it)

No that's me too!
I do know guys that can & do make them regularly.
Judging from the amount of shooting & practice at the gameclub on running deer targets I would be very surprised if Captionon wasn't one of them.

Crowca: that was 20 deer in 3 years.
Yes it's very good, since most camps consist of probably an average of 10-12 guys per week on the hunt, & party hunting is the norm, very good hunters & lucky guys do tend to shoot more than others.

Ahh i get it, you split the meat in the party of course. I wondered how big your family was to need 6-7 deer a year yourself :)

In Ontario, we can 'party' hunt. That is we can use the tags of other members of our party when hunting.
That allows me to shoot as many deer as there are people in our gang, as long as they are agreeable to that.
in some WMUs we can also purchase 'extra' tags, giving us even more opportunity.
Of course if the deer don't show, you can't shoot 'em.

My opinion to shooting movers is SHOOT WITH IN YOUR SKILL LEVELS AND COMFORT ZONE.If you can't hit a target free hand standing at the range ...you better sit in a stand or blind and bait .hunters that shoot lots off hand usually can take the running shot and not just wound it .
Hunting has all kinds of variables .just like target shooting doping wind, heat waves ,quality of firearm ,ammunition,,,ect.
Biggest factor is always human error. What and how you learn from your own errors is the defining limiter .

I don't know how Captonion's camp works but I think most camps work the same. For instance we run about 10 guys the 1st week, so all deer shot in 1st week go to the butcher on that sat & gets cut. When picked up we simply divide evenly into 10 boxes & there you go. Then again the same second week.

Our camp works the same for sharing up the deer.

My tag is your tag is the way things work at our camp.If you are lucky enough to see a deer you shoot it.Some are just luckier than others, and your luck can dry up pretty fast. The best shot in our gang has not seen a deer in 6 seasons now.I have just been lucky with 10 deer two years ago,and 9 last year, and 1 this season.Who knows I may not see another deer for the next few years.Just the way it works.

My family is just my wife, myself and two little boys aged 6 and 9. We still need a minimum of 4 deer a year to feed us along with the several dozen ducks and geese we eat. The moose this year replaces a few of those deer.

We hunt in a group of 5 to 6 you fill your own tag, pick you animal and shoot it.
If you require help,to fill your tag you need to ask.
Going deer hunting and have someone fill your tag for you seems to defeat the purpose of going hunting.

Only if you feel a real strong need to beat your chest proclaiming to everyone
"I SHOT A DEER"
For quite a few of the rest of us it's still a deer --> in the pot, matters not a bit who shot it!

That must be a fun camp to hunt with?:runaway:.

That is a strange way to look at it..

I like to be somewhat selective of the deer I shoot. Can't do that if someone else is shooting your tag.
That's a bit of the east VS west perspective.
Our guys are just happy with the venison, and most of us have used our tags on someone else's deer at some point. No arguments to date.
My father went 25 years hunting without using his tag, he just had a dry spell, and never saw a deer. He was happy to see his tag go on a deer, and not be wasted. There are usually lots of tags left at end of season. (He eventually did connect)

Our gang are meat hunters.
No does the first week.If there are tags left for the second week(there always is) anything goes besides fawns.Virgin hunters are allowed to shoot whatever they see.

Slow senior,we choose to shoot our own.
It has nothing to do with beating our chest,if you choose to have someone else shoot your deer go ahead.
There is a post were the guy hasn't shot a deer in six years?I would be hunting somewhere else.
I have posted here that success is important to me as part of hunting,I am not the guy that says a good day is sitting in the woods.
I expect to shoot something every time I go hunting, whatever the game is,If not I would stay at home.

Gatehouse: I agree I like to eat venison, why would I want one that was gut shot and chased for miles.I am selective of which one I shoot.Spots are the best.

If you are Meat hunters shoot the doe's and fawns they are the best,my 2 cents.First week only bucks, you are missing out on the best eating, shoot some doe's.

I have been very lucky, but if/when my luck goes down hill I would be mor than happy for someone to fill my tag.As much as it pleases me to fill my own tag,it makes me way more happy to see one of the youngsters get a deer.

Age your buck in a cooler for 15+ days, and you would be hard pressed to tell the differece from a doe.
