In your opinion or experience, what is the best out the box accuracy varmint rifle in .223 or 22-250 made today for under $1000.00? I am really in the buying mood, but would like some help starting in the right place.

Remington or Savage

My Rem XR-100 in 22-250 was VERY accurate.
So are my 2 Savage .223's though.

There is very little difference in out of the box accuracy from either of the to aforementioned companies. Both are capable of producing both Tack Drivers and +MOA on any given day.

Personally, if I had to choose one, I would get a Remington. (I am no Fanboy for either company)
I have seen Remingtons with aftermarket barrels outperform a re-barreled Savage (Both having Krieger Barrels with work done by the same gunsmith) if you decide to go that way in the future.

There are good and bad in every brand and there are good and bad in every model. For varmint hunting I use a Remington SPS Varmint in 204 because it is cheap, plenty accurate enough and I consider the 204 barrels to be disposable. It is cheaper to buy a new SPS rifle than it is to re-barrel. When I cook the barrel, I have a donor action for making a custom rifle. I use these for killing varmints, not rubbing my naughty bits, so I couldn't care less about the cosmetics or achieving perfect "feel".

I have had the most consistently good results from Tikka, however they are not an easy or cheap rifle to upgrade.

+ 1 for the Tikka! I was playing with a Tikka t3 tactical in 223 with a 20 inch barrel a few months ago that would put 3 nosler j4 comps into slightly under 2 inches at 500 meters. Not to shabby me thinks for a factory barrel and untuned handloads! Have had good luck with some Remington stuff too though.

Me personally, when choosing a bolt action rifle, it's a Remington 700 or nothing. I own too...an M700P in .308, and a 700 SPS Tactical in .223. The Remington 700 SPS Tactical is a relatively inexpensive rifle, and has VERY impressive out-of-the-box accuracy. My SPS Tactical .223 Rem shoots sub-MOA at 200 yards useing match grade ammo (Federal 77 GR. BTHP) The rifle itself goes for about $800.00...very light, 20" barrel, Hogue overmold rubber stock, matte black finish, X-Mark trigger that breaks like glass and is lighter than previous models.

I agree, I'm very happy with my Tikka T3 Varmint in .308, shoots great, looks good and it has a silky smooth action that matches the adjustable trigger. :D

If I was picking for myself I'd be getting a Savage. I have an LE2B that shoots quite well out of the box and I have no reason to think that a VLP or similar Savage wouldn't do the same. I can't recall hearing of a dog Savage on the board but have heard of plenty of dog 700s. Not to say that the 700 is ####e, but with the ease of switching out a Savage barrel if you decide you want another caliber, and my experience with the rifle itself, I'd lean that way. I'm half thinking of a Savage Target action and one of Jerry's Shilen tubes in a 6BR or some such thing to shoot little groups and whack sod poodles.

I wouldn't say my 2 Remington's were accurate out of the box. Both needed bedding and triggers tuned because 6 lbs is way too much.

Savage and Tikka would be my pick for the best out of the box performance. Since you can adjust the triggers easily.

But Remington does stand out as being the most upgradeable.
