I do way more carrying while hiking than shooting.......
Wondering, what's the lightest centerfire rifle [with sights ] out there, new or old.

The '94 30-30 ain't bad, and carries nicely, but there's got to be lighter weight rifles still.

Lightest production rifle with sights right now is the Tikka T3 lite at 6.25 lbs. Don't let anyone tell you they don't come with sights, cause they do.;)

A Kimber 84M Montana in standard short action calibers is a hair over 5lbs - I used to have one, didn't like it; guns that expensive should not have that kind of problems (accuracy, feeding, blah). Plus, you'd have to have the iron sights installed by a gunsmith, as they don't come with them. SakoAlberta is correct though - they are a dream for a light weight packing rig - wow, they're nice in the hands.

NEF/H&R - makes a very affordable single-shot youth rifle in 243 with iron sights that comes out a whisker over 5lbs (probably could get it down below that with a different stock. They also make a 12 gauge with rifle sights called (if I recall correctly) the Tracker, that's a hair over 5lbs.

Ultra Light Arms and HS Precision both make some ultra-light hunting rifles (5lbs range), but I don't think either of those come with iron sights.

An original Rem 700 Ti was in the 5.5-ish lb range as I recall.

The Winchester you're looking at is probably around 6 1/2lbs, if I'm not mistaken.

And lastly - I like Tikka's - they are my current favorite rifle. :)

A Falling Block Works Model K, with a light barrel and reasonable wood on it will come in at around 5 pounds. Less with a pencil barrel. Guys have built them as heavy as a 7-30 Waters and similar cartridges.

A Fraser Highlander falling block will do the same. Figure 5.5 with a scope on it, again with the pencil diameter barrel. Or less.
These are both falling block single shots sized towards a Hornet or Bee cartridge. The "K" looks like a mini Win Highwall, while the Highlander looks like a shrunk down Ruger #1, sorta.

Not gonna get a 300 Win Mag in either action, though. More on the level of 17 or 22 Hornets, or a .256 Winchester, or .218 Bee kinda cartridges.

A Stevens Favorite in .32 Short would be a 4 1/4 pound centerfire rifle. :) A TC Contender G2 is a bit more than a pound heavier.

One of the H&R Handi Rifles in a Lightweight model will come in at about 5 1/2 pounds.

A Martini cadet action can be built as light as this, too, and can handle modern High pressure cartridges based on the .223. It'd be another custom build...
What kind of centerfire rifle, to do what, with?

Cheers

I've had a Kimber, it was very nice. I am currently carrying a rem 700 Ti in 7mm SAUM. It's not as light, but still pretty handy.

If budget is a real issue, it's hard to beat a Tikka T3 blued synthetic, for less than $600 it's a hell of a deal.

During the early 1990's there was a company, yes stateside, called Ultralight Arms?? I believe one of thier lightest single shot bolt actions, was in 22-250 & weighed, I think around 4 pounds.

From what I remember, thier rifle action, was based on a scalloped-out Remington 700.

EDIT: And it looks like they are still in business too;
