If only . . .

Ah, yes, the good old days....
Stens were $35, brand new M1A1 Thompsons $135, as new MP44s $135. A Madsen M1950 smg was US$40 from Dansk Industrie Syndicat, a Madsen M1950 .30-06 lmg, ex-Danish Army, with all accessories and magazines, refurbished to new US$75. And yes, you could buy them. C1A1, C2A1 rifles and C1 smgs could be purchased directly from CAL.

Let's see.... M2 carbines $135, 7.92 Inglis Bren with 12 mags and a crate of ball $400, Lewis $100, with mags and lots of parts. Remeber seeing a pair of MP18s, for $125 and $135, and an M3 for $125 or so. There was a lot of obsolete/obsolescent stuff available. What wasn't vet. bring back could be had from Interarmco, or other dealers.

Was there, looked at a Thompson 1928,, $800. and a Lewis, sitting on this guys piano in his rumpus room for $900.. My wife just freaked, I was making $900/month, 1973, got rid of her two years later, should have been sooner. 10 years earlier took a buddy's 1928 out, $10/50 .45ACP, took me 20 minutes to load the mag, 10 seconds later 1 1/2 days wages were gone,, still remember the erection tho! I told him it jammed, he was too busy laughing to respond... You could hear the empty's hitting the ground for what seemed like 10 secs afterward. Who knew they would be banned?? Are you in the stock market today? Would you like to go back?? If I knew I would have a $hit load more stuff,, still got too much!!!

Some CGNs among us obviously were lucky enough to acquire these in-country toys at insane bargain basement prices. Would old timers like Klunk, Stencollector and others like to come clean and confess?

I just missed the 1978 law change by a year or so (born in 1961), so I didnt get anything either.

Shoot!!! has it right when he factors in the wages at the time.
Kind of hard to justify dropping a months wages on a gun, if it seems like they will always be available.
Especially if it eats 1 1/2 days pay in 10 seconds!

Many gun dealers in the old days had lay away plans for the financially challenged gunnutz. Kind of like the sub prime mortgage arrangement in US.

 Im an old timer....??

the prices in that add are before my time...Im actually probably one of the youngest 12(3) holders.I bought my first 12(3) about a year before it was outlawed...but it got me into the class

A few years before then when I had no money I remember seeing MG34s for $400...MP44s for $800....stuff like that

Despite the Gov. this stuff just keeps going up in value

Buying from Wayne Haines was a hairy experience.....You got a "knock on the door" if you did buy anything. It was a long time ago, and best left buried in the back yard....... Don't dig up old bones...they sometimes are smelly
Lewis guns were 35.00 with case and spare barrel, 34's were 125.00 and stens 50.00, BUT in dollars of the day. Who had the money then and ammo was not easy to find. When ammo was cheap the prices went up. Vicious circle...
one of the "old curmudgeons"....

WOW! Does that ad bring back memories! Wayne is a family friend and I worked with him off and on and got to play with all those "toys". He still lives 10 minutes from me, but is now TOTALLY out of guns. The clipping is from the late 70's. He ended up taking the government to task, right up through a Supreme Court Challenge and you can thank Mr. Haines for the fact that we have the grandfather clauses today on some of the more "politically objectable firearms". They were going to totally ban all full autos and C/A's back then. The financial cost of doing it almost ruined him though. It was a long hard fight but he eventually won. I remember bringing that load of dewat Browning .50's listed in the above ad, back from Fredricton in a snowstorm in a Ford Econoline van. I forget how many there were, but it was quite a stack of 'em. Was that baby light in the front end on the road! GRIN We had great traction though. I consider myself blessed to have been able to be around so many unique firearms as a teenager.

All you "pups" complaining about missing the old days should be sure you have a SKS, AR15 and a semi auto pistol as they will be natural targets for grandfathering if things change down east.. I didn't buy C/A cause why would I want a semi when there are lots of them around?? Not the brightest bulb on the tree, you don't get old and wise, you just remember your last fruk up and don't repeat!!!

I am afraid you have the wrong opinion of me. I was only 17-1/2 when the
full auto prohibition went into place. I missed that deadline by 6 months. When the CA thing happened, I was a mortgage rich cash poor soldier with a new kid, so I watched that boat come and go. When the NFA was offering free 12.6 handguns at the gunshows, like an idiot I passed as well.

So now I just play the loopholes, with either semi auto copies of the F/A stuff, or lengthening the barrel on things like a Liberator (needed about 4mm to make it restricted only). I do know a lot of the full auto guys in my area, and they are some of the greatest guys you will ever meet. But gone are the days of full auto shoots and demonstrations, at least for now.

I remember doing the honeymoon thing years ago with my first wife and there was a C/A M1919 for $800 at Ontario gun. My new bride said to go ahead and buy it....I developed a conscience and we bought a new microwave instead. Well she is long gone, the microwave is still working some 21 years later, and I missed the boat on the 12.3 etc. :bangHead:

Trust me, these days if I want a toy, I buy it. I do not plan to use hindsight in the future.

Another neat-o story from Stencollector

The item I purchased was a Czech heavy belt fed MG....I figured something crazy like that would get me into any class the ####pumps in Ottawa could dream up

**WRONG**

All it got me was 12(3) converted auto.......BUT....I believe that is the best 'special' class one can have...if you can have only one
