I already do this for 8mm Mauser... take a 30-06 cut it down, reform, trim, resize one last time, trim again.

With everybody picking up their .308 these days it gets a little scarce. Anybody ever cut down and reform .308 out of the tons of 30-06 lying on the range floor?

I make .308 in two steps from the original 06 brass ,they go through the 8mm die and then a final pass through the .308 die. Trim the brass and you should check neck thickness inside and out, as you may need to ream inside and or out. Annealing the brass will extend case life.
Before reloading make sure that the "new" brass extracts properly as the extractor groove is different from 06 to 08 brass.

Personally I woudn't bother going from 30-06 to .308 for a number of reasons

1, Lot of work.

2, Neck thickness will be excessive, (will need neck turning)

3, Case capacity will be low

4, .308 brass is pretty cheap to buy

Thanks for the tips, guys. I'll definately have to try one or two and check to see how they extract.

As for the 7mm-08 and 260, well, there isn't that much brass to be had.

I was just wondering as there is plenty of 30-06 to be had for free and not much 308.

As for the time factor, I don't spend much time on them. Usually I just sit at the drill press after work for about an hour so I can avoid traffic. Kills two birds with one stone that way... less aggrivation and I get some "new" 8mm mauser brass at the same time. :) If it works good, then I'll have some "new" 308 brass, too! :D

Actually, those are two calibers that usually always seem to be in stock in most decent shops I've been to (and online). 243 as well. However, if you're looking for freebies, yeah, those aren't going to turn up on the range floor very often.
