Ok I've only owned one semi-auto Mil-Surp,a M1 carbine when I was a teen ager. A guy at work has offered me what I think is a FN 49 for a real good price. He says it is a 30-06 with a fixed magazine. Are these guns any good? Are they reliable? Any known problems with them?

Totally agree with Steve-O's assessment. I have an Egyptian in 8mm. They are extremely well manufactured, look great (IMHO), and all reports are they are very reliable - mine has been so far.

Steve-O's comments about the firing pin are the one big "gotcha" with these, and there is some consensus among owners that there's a need to be somewhat careful with ammunition selection, but that may be more for the 8mm than the 30-06.

Snap it up, or tell your friend you're not interested, but you know a guy... :D

Am I correct in assuming a one-piece firing pin can result in slam-fires? I think someone mentioned this happening to them while shooting an Ljungman rifle with Igman ammo...

Its been along time since I owned my FN 49 in 8x57mm but if I remember right they do have adjustable gas system. So bullet weight may not be as critical as say a garrand rifle. The recoil spring can be another 'gotcha' if not installed correctly as it can be damaged during operation. Like I said that was sometime ago, so don't take my word as gospil.

Not if the bolt is clean and dry and if the pin is in good condition.

The early one-piece pins had a higher chance of breaking and then protruding from the bolt face and causing a slam-fire. This was lessened by the later 2-piece pins.

What's the good price?

I had a Hakim and it was great - only complaint was that it threw the brass at the target too. Same caliber range and similar handling rifles imho, I'd go for it!

Well I saw the gun today. It's pretty far from being a FN. More like half a world away. It turned out being a Chi-Com SKS. The owner figured that 7.62x39 was the metric version of 30-06,is all I can figure. Dang I was already for a SAFN 49 too.
