I had finally come around to the idea of using a vertical foregrip instead of a magwell hold (turns out it really is faster, and I burned a finger on the delta ring during some volume training this summer).

I also like a light on my gun. And why not put a bipod on? After all, they're handy out past about 300 yards and a lot of the 3-gun hot shots are using them.

This all looked like a lot of money, weight and bulk - until I found the Fab Defense T-POD with integral light.

You can see the vfg/bipod operation here: http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=N6FJl8pmzro , and the light is just a push-button 100-lumen light.

It worked well enough - I could deploy the bipod quickly with a slap on the activation buttons, and collapse it into a vfg almost as quickly using any surface to push the bipod legs back in. The light wasn't a surefire, but it worked well enough - most of the time, see below - and would be good enough for a darkened shoot house.

Here's a quick pic:

Notice the tools in the background. Why would I have tools out?

Because the damned thing just broke while I was putting it away. It's been used for one shoot and enough practise to get comfortable with it.

Notice the kinked spring:

Nothing lasts forever. Did I just get a rare lemon?

In the next picture you'll see the spring and guiderod. The guiderod is supposed to be pressed into the body of the unit and remain stationary as the leg moves in and out. In my case, the guiderod fell out, allowing the spring to kink.

Why did it fall out? Because it's pressed about 1/16" into plastic, with no positive retention, not even knurling. I popped the second one out by hand with almost no resistance. Every time you put your gun down hard on the bipod, those little rods will want to move in and eventually exit their mooring.

Conclusion: nice toy. Don't bet your life on it. Or a competitive match.

Is the light really waterproof as claimed?

In a word, no. The light is activated by a pushbutton at the back - visible in the first pic. This attaches to a small rod that travels through the mount and pushes on a nylon cup. The cup holds an aluminum slug that, when pushed forward, completes the electrical circuit to turn the light on. It works "okay": often the connection is weak and the light dim until you push again, harder. You have to push pretty hard to keep the connection going.

The light proper has o-rings on the body to keep water out - but the `small rod` mentioned above has no water-repelling features. After a day in the rain some water got into the light body, behind the nylon cup, having travelled along the `small rod`. It`s a close-tolerance cup, so the water got no further - but nylon is hygroscopic (it absorbs water, albeit gradually). The day after the rain, the cup had swelled enough - about .017`` - to jam up. Full disassembly followed by several days of drying over a mild heat source shrunk the cup to its original size, and everything worked fine again. But it should have worked fine without that, given that it is sold as `waterproof`.

I've just emailed Fab Defense looking for a replacement. If I get one, it goes up on eBay. If not, one more lump of plastic and metal for the scrap bin. Update: no reply to two emails.

I am now in the market for a nice vfg/led-light combination. The bipod can wait; I do just fine off of my elbows out to a good distance.

I doubt you baught it directly from FAB so contacting them is a waste of time. FAB has a lifetime warrentee that works through its dealers, and the dealers should all know this. Contact whoever you baught it from and see if they will honor the defect.

If not PM me and I'll see what I can do for you.

Thanks for the heads up on this little item.

I was thinking of getting one to try out after seeing it online but now....

How was it other wise? Could some of the issues be sorted out and make it worthwhile.

Things like JB welding the rods in place or threaded. Could the flashlight be made waterproof with the addition of an o-ring or some grease?

Update: Are you sure it's made by FAB.... they don't show a version with the flashlight on their website.

Other than that, it was good - did exactly what it said it would. Bulky, but to be expected. Quick to deploy and put back.

An oring, maybe (where to put it?) Grease would work. JB weld is amazing stuff - might do the job it you roughed-up the rod end .

You actually expected any other result than failure from a FAB product??

Please, the FAB stuff may not be top 1% for quality but they are priced accordingly and it is better then a lot of the stuff people use on their rifles every day. Like everyone else they have their lemons but I've been happy with pretty much all of the FAB stuff I've used.

They are actually the bottom 1% of quality.

Heck some UTG products handle better stress than lots of FAB products, and UTG is made for aisoft !

As for : is better than lots of the stuff people have on their rifles every day :

Believe me, a stock out of the box gun with no bypod is better then a gun with broken bypod/grip thingy. A least that is one less worry to concentrate on... Shooting !

If you are going to install junk... Dont.

They won't deal with it, as I told you their warranty is run through their dealers. Who did you buy it from?
As I told you, I expected Fab to at least acknowledge and refer me to a dealer - many other companies who work through dealer networks have responded to me in some fashion. Ignoring customers is pathetically poor service.

To answer your question, an Israeli dealer (eBay) who has not been helpful, but who did respond. As mentioned, I have not pursued it since my final action would be to resell any replacement, and it's just not worth my time.

I "suspect" UTG is made by some factories that also do airsoft stuff. Yeh, they are made in China - that's why it is cheap.

However, the technique of building airsoft stuff is the same as in certain "real" firearms application. Investment casting and MIM are all valid methods. A shop is a shop. IBM churned out M1 carbines in the WW2 as well. A machine shop that builds airsoft stuff can also churn out parts for firearms. The tools are more or less the same in many areas.

To be honest, I have not heard any complaints of UTG stuff here on CGN. yeh, it is is cheap and therefore you should prepare to get what you pay for. On the other hand, even some major brand name US manufacturers, by looking at the parts in their products, which I suspect are sourced from China as well.

I have the FAB for stock on my VZ58 and its been solid, other then cleaning (an issue shared by all UHG mounts)I have no complaints. FAB pistol grip also great and right inline with it's price point. FAB M4 butt stock is better the the RRA or any other one I've used. I've had no problems with my T-pod either.

acrashb, I already told you to PM me and I'll see if I can help you. I'm not a dealer but I have access to FAB that most don't and I may be able to help you.
