Mosin #### on opening...functioning issues.

only problem with the LE is that if you load your ammo wrong it won't cycle at all. blasted rimmed cartridge.

Same problem with the Mosin. 7.62x54R is one of those archaic rimmed cartridges. I have no idea how they kept them from loading wrong since the ammo seems to move around in the stripper clips.

It's a genius system actually, check it out...

Seems to be that the Mag follower rocks back and forth, and there is allot of play in the action overall. :)

It's definitely broken? Anyone have a digital pic of what it should look like?

Anyone got a good cocking piece they'd part with?

It's not definitely anything. I assumed since you pointed it out that it had a jagged surface or something to make you think it was damaged. If it doesn't look damaged, it probably isn't - I can't tell from your pics.

Generally speaking, with mosins, the sticky-bolt thing is NOT due to the cocking piece.

Claven- Is that just the ammo sticking in the chamber issue or something else?

BTW, I just got off the phone with Tradeex. I sent him the closeup pics of the cocking piece, and he compared it with ones he has there and some bolts he has and...they are all exactly the same as mine...nothing wrong with it.

I think I'll put some rifle grease on the ramp and call her good.

Can anyone recommend what ammunition to buy and where? I want stuff that will function well, decent accuracy wouldn't hurt either.

When locked up, the bolt is nice and snug but when cycling, kind of sloppy side to side...are they all like that?

Pretty much yes, and some more then others.
I'm told this is a good thing when dealing with snow, mud and ice.

It's only important to be tight when it is closed anyway. :)

Close-ups

Here are some close-ups of a very old Remington bolt I have; I didn’t offer to send the cocking piece to you because that bolt is all-matching and I will probably use it on another finned Remington that misses a bolt. Compare with yours and see if there’s not a difference in the cocking ramp tip profile.
Your first pic really confused me: I saw a fracture on the metal where there only was a blur.
But the tip profile looks to me like it is strangely shaped. Is it?
If you had access to another part you could exchange and see if it cures the problem.
BTW, how’s the firing pin protrusion? Is the back of the pin flush with the surface of the cocking knob?
PP.

Thanks for the closeups Pepere!

No need to break up a matched setup...according to Tradeex my part is fine, just like the others he has.

Firing pin protrusion...I lined up the slot in the cocking piece and the pin, then used the gauge on the combo tool, the pin protrusion is within spec.

I'm going to try another cocking piece anyway and see if it makes it function more reliably. Plus which, the barrel is Izhevesk and the cocking piece has the Tula star on it...

Actually, the Mosins were designed to allow complete interchangeability between parts. Did you check the firing pin's shoulder for traces of galling or anything strange?
PP.

I suspect with decent ammo, your gun will be fine. S&B and Igman make reloadable ammo available in Canada.

Ah, but $22 plus 13% tax means not shooting much...I'm looking for the highest quality of the corrosive surplus out there. Someone mentioned Czech stickiing in the chamber?

Czech, Hungarian...??

I received another cocking piece yesterday and installed it. The problem remains exactly the same...I dry fire it and then can just barely even open the bolt. With the bolt disassembled I can't see any problems. The firing pin, and all parts look like new.

I have snap caps inbound...that might make all the difference. As the firing pin would be held back a bit by being in contact with the primer, that's a bit of an easier job to open the bolt...I hope.

We'll you definitely have an aftermarket, (or factory ?) sniper bolt.

Perhaps it its crappily engineered aftermarket attempt at a sniper bolt? I'd look for evidence of where the bolt is sticking, like metal on metal abrasion. I'd give the bolt and action a good polishing to see if that helps.

And the mosin has a "magazine interrupter" so it doesn't matter how you load the shells in the stipper clip, it lines them up for you when you load it in.
