I'm just wondering how the 270, 7mm and 300 WSM cartridges are for recoil. I don't know anyone shooting one. I shoot 30-06 in a tikka whitetail, and find it pleasant to shoot. I beleive it weighs around 7 5/8 lbs. I'm thinking of getting another rifle in a short action, and I'm trying to decide between 308and 7-08 or the WSM's. I am looking a Savage weather warrior, Browning X bolt, Ruger hawkeye, tikka t3. I love my tikka, but don't like the fact that tikka doesn't have a short action. I wish I would have just bought a ss model in the first place, but that's another story. Advice please.

I know that a tikka t3 in 300 win mag kicks like a mule.

I have used all three, in the same rifle I believe you have them ranked lowest to highest recoil.

Rifle and Round Choice

I use a Remington 700 with a SS 22" light contour Mountain rifle barrel in 7-08. It dosn't have a recoil pad and I don't mind the light recoil. A young friend snuggled up too close to the scope last month, and got wacked by the eyepiece, but it didn't cut him.

A Remington 700 action is kind of like owning a Harley. you can find anything you can think of for a 700. May not be as nice as a Harley but you have lots of options.

Buy it in the laminate stainless model...its a bit heavier. If not, look at a Sako m75 in the SS or Greywolf. I seen a Greywolf in the 300WSM in the "SM" action with a Leupld VX3 scope and Optilok rings and bases on another Canadian hunting forum. Cant remeber the price off hand. Let me know And I'll pm you info.

I love my Tikka T3 in the LS 270WSM models. I have 2. My wife shoots one comfortably. Great cailber with 140gr Accubonds. Awesome performance on big game (elk/moose/bears/deer) at various distances.:sniper:

I had a savage weatherwarrior in 300 win mag and she kicked like a sum#####. It was only 6.75 lbs. The recoil pad was a hockey puck. My Tikka T3 lite in .338 win mag (6 3/8 lbs) is a beast. I put a decelerator pad on her and she's tamed quite a bit, but she's no benchrester. Huntin sledgehammer, now thats a different story.

The three calibers you quoted are very close to the 30-06. I am not sure you gain that much fire power from any of the three. Again, not know the reason for your new acquisition; it is hard to advise you which one to get.

From a recoil standpoint, the lowest is .270, next is 7mm and 300WSM the highest. If you can comfortably handle a 30-06, you shouldn’t have any recoil issue with these three. Keep in mind that the lighter the rifle the harder it kicks. Both the X-Bolt and T3 are sub 7 pounds rifles.

When I picked up my Stainless T3 in .308 (ordered 10 months ago) earlier this week, I looked at the X-Bolt. It has a noticeably skinnier forearm than my A-Bolts. However, it comes with a very nice and soft recoil pad (a $40 value comparing to the Pachmayr or Limbsaver).

Also note that the prices for Browning and Tikka have gone up 15%+ the last three weeks. Have fun!

I don't really need another gun(or most of the 20 I own) I just thought I might watch for a used rifle, and that a short action would be nice and light for pushing bush. It's mostly for deer. I realize I am looking at lightweights, thats why the recoil is a factor. Just wondering if the recoil of a 7mm WSM in a 6.5 lb rifle is going to be a lot stiffer than a 308 win. I have heard that the old 7 mm Rem and 300 Win in a lightweight are pretty bad. Thanks for the responses, keep them coming.

If "pushin bush" is what your going to do then stay away from the magnums. A good old 308 or 7-08 will do just fine. Cheaper to shoot, more fun to shoot, and just as effective. If your worried about the occaisional long shot, the 308 and 7-08 have PLENTY of reach for any hunting situation.

Good advice!

Any of the 260, 270, 7-08 and 308 will do the trick for deer. Recoil on these rounds are pretty mild. If availability of ammo is important to you then focus on 270 and 308.

Depends on the weight of the 308.

My 7WSM is 6.5 lb unscoped (add 1 lb~ for scope), and I find it no worse than a 308 I used to own (Savage). A well-fitting stock will cut down on recoil IMO.

We must assume it is the same rifle and the same scope.

I am not crazy about Chuck's articles, but I thought this will serve as a point of reference.

I shoot a Kimber Montana in 300WSM. Light rifle and shooter (155 lbs 5'6"):D
No problems what so ever. The WSM's do offer a bit more muzzle flip however.
Consider adding a Limbsaver recoil pad if you are a bit recoil shy.
