Is there an easy way to put a permanent choke on a 18.5" Mossberg 500 cylinder bore barrel?

My gunsmith wants to ream most of the barrel but I was rather thinking of rolling the muzzle end into some constriction.

Has this been done? Any other suggestions?

The only way I've ever heard of is threading for choke tubes.

You can get it done for between $50-$75. I believe stock Mossbergs are Invector chokes - might as well get it done the same!

Out of curiousity, what would reaming the barrel do?

The said barrel is too thin to thread. Reaming it while leaving an inch or so untouched is like expanding the barrel a tad while keeping the muzzle at the old bore. That creates a choke but I think it won't work well with slugs.

My intention is to be able to shoot steel while improving slug accuracy a bit. An improved cylinder seems to do both.

Another thing to consider is, one hour of gunsmithing is $60 while Cabellas sells a new barrel for $155 and a brand new Maverick 88 with a screw-in choke for $199.

Seems to me Brownell's sells the proper tool to put on a choke. Squeezes the barrel a tick as I recall. No reaming involved. Mind you, there's not much point to a choke on an 18.5" barrel. That length just the way it is, makes a pretty good upland bird and small game shotgun.

Couldn't find it on Brownell's website. You wouldn't happen to remember the name or part of it, would you?

"...wouldn't happen to remember..." Nope. Most days, if I even know what day it is, remembering anything is a good thing. I have no problem remembering seeing stuff, but rarely exactly where. It wasn't recently and it may not have been Brownell's. The tool wouldn't be cheap either.
If you really want a choke, have changeable chokes installed. Mind you, there has to be enough steel. It'd be cheaper to buy another barrel.

Permanent choke

In my humle opinion there is the other way, cheap and efective. If you can live with small cosmetic imperfection (cool looking to me personaly) You can let Your gunsmith heat shrink steel bushing, say 1" long, .005" dia smaler than OD of barrel, on the end of muzzle. Thicknes of said bushing must be no less than thicknes of barrel. Proces could be adjusted to match desired results. Once I did shrink muzzle of my Sportco 44 about .0007" and shrink my grups in half! Never did it on shotgun, but metod should work the same. Roman.

choke

You can buy a choke insert and silver solder it in place. this is old time gunsmithing.

Interesting method. I'll let him know
