Any opinions on which one people would choose? I'm in the market for a .45 eventually and it may end up being one of these two since a lot of the cheap options don't really tickle my fancy.

I've got a stainless 220 that shoots well, 'fits' me and is definitely a keeper.
I have had every HK 45ACP. variant....i.e. Tactical, Tactical Compact and the HK45....didn't keep any of them.
For various personal reasons, the only 'plastic' 45ACP pistol that I currently own, and will keep, is a Glock 21.
My preference, if I were you, would be to save a few bucks, and pick up a Glock 21, but with the new slimmer frame.
In a side by side shooting trial, myself and my friends, all preferred the Glock...considering handling characteristics, recoil, etc.
You're better off to handle/shoot/fondle as many of these options as you can, before you plunk your money down.
I am in a position that I can afford to lose a few $ on each purchase in that I bought, shot a small number of rounds, and put an HK45 up on the EE within a week....it just didn't do it for me in terms of grip/perceived recoil, etc......
YRMV....

Never handled an HK45 but the usp line has always felt very clunky to me so unless HK has done something very different, I'd go with the P220. You call a 1+K handgun expensive? Target sports has a Nighthawk Vickers for $4500. Now that's an expensive .45

First, find out what fits your hand.

Second, decide what kind of action you want to operate (TDA, DAO, Striker vs. hammer, manual safety or not, decocker or not).

THEN, look at the most objective ratings you can find.

I personally ended up with a Sig P220, which has served me well for about 6 years. Now, though, I am considering whether to go to something that is not a TDA, as my work gun is DAO, and maybe both of my handguns should work the same way. I am waiting for it to be on the market for a bit longer (and have a few more "issues"), but am seriously considering moving to the M&P in .45. The Glocks, to me, feel like hockey sticks.

Try as many as you can, before you buy anything!

I guess it's personal preference, but I find the USP45 to be superior to Glock 21 in every conceivable way. In particular, perceived recoil is quite a bit softer. I've never shot the HK45, but I would imagine that it's at least as nice as the USP.

With regards to the choice between Sig and HK, I would have to say that if you were deciding between 9mm guns from those two manufacturers, it would be a tossup. In .45, i would go with HK, mostly because Sig has been having some issues with the P220 lately (particularly with models that have internal extractors). In addition, the HK 45 gives you two more rounds in the mag.

It's all relative. If you think those are expensive .45's, you should check out the 1911's used for NRA wadcutter bullseye shooting! :D

Sig .45 are good, accurate and they fit me rather well, even with my medium size hand. They sit higher inthe hand then a 1911, but find no difference in recoil. I had to put Hogue on mine, cos' the wood one make the grips a lot bigger!

Expensive as far as standard production handguns go, yeah. Customs/pseudo-customs are obviously a totally different story.

foxbat: I've tried a G17 and absolutely hated it. I really wanted to like it, but the grip characteristics really didn't work with me. Is the G21SF a little better than the 17 in that aspect?

Grip on the Glock is my least favorite attribute of the pistol...otherwise OK.
The large frame Glocks....21/21SF/20 are different from the small frame units, so it may, or may not, work better for you.
The only way you'll know is to get a chance to see how it feels......

I own a Sig P220 and a Glock G21 SF and both are excellent shooters. The Sig feels and little nicer in the hand but it's got nothing over the Glock in terms of accuracy ( at least in my hands ). I'm sure both would serve you well. Here's a few pictures for comparison.

I find the Sig grips uncomfortable because of that large ridge where my right thumb normally rests. It makes it impossible for me to maintain a high grip on the gun... I felt my hands were too low. I couldn't shoot it near as fast as my Glock.

I was geared up to buy a 229 Elite but now Im not sure. Does anyone know if the Elite grips are better in this regard?

I've handled both, but I have only fired the P220.... not the HK45 yet. Unless the HK is somehow an insane tack driver to justify the extra $$$, I've gotta go with the Sig. The Sig feels just the slightest bit heavier in the hand, which I like (especially the ST, which is the one I would go with).

The Glock shouldn't even be in the running. ;)

wow, another get a glock hijack.
the glock is like a 12g pump. its just needed in everymans collection.
if you dont have a glock .get one.

but to the question at hand, hk or sig, id go with sig. and i will. im in the market for a 45 and have been thinking about the 220, usp45 hk45 and usp compact 45. and it still comes down to sigs even with all the hk options.
i guess maybe i like sigs better. plus i like the all metal frames over plastic ones anyways and with a heavy round like the 45 you want some metal to soak up some of that recoil.

theres a few pennies for ya.

Thanks for the input guys, but shame on everyone who is slowly convincing me to try (once again) a Glock in my considerations. :D

I've tried the Glock 17, HK , M&P and SIG at a range in the US before I bought. The SIG's "felt" like a more quality gun. (SS frame) and were most accurate in my hands. That is why I bought the P220 elite in stainless. In the end it felt better and shot better in my hand. (Much better in fact)

The one I liked the least was the glock. (No offense I'm sure it is fine) but I didn't enjoy shooting it. Too light (recoil flip was bad) and the grip felt like holding onto a hockey stick.

Go SIG
