I have an opportunity to pickup 20 - standard grade walnut blanks but I have no idea what to offer.
Any ideas out there as to the value of Standard grade blanks would be worth??

Thanks for the input.
I was hoping to sell a few, but at $10 each the shipping would cost more.

Cheers

Post a few pictures and dimensions....I'll let you know if the blanks are suitable for stock work. Are they dry?

I will get some pix next week.

They are dry, been stored properly for years.
He is going to stick to keeping just higher grade stocks.

Go to a lumberyard , that sells hardwood and price out common walnut
boards sold by the board foot and you will be shocked.
a $10.oo offer for a full length blank is an insult.

I gotta agree with marshall on this. $10 is pretty cheap.

Windsor plywood is selling rough sawn, dry walnut lumber in more or less random sizes. for about $7 a board foot (12"x12"x1"). That is for plain walnut, much of which is sapwood, so is pale rather than the dark "walnut" color.
Figure maybe 6 bd ft in a slab that would make a one piece stock, and figure that that price is at full retail...

Anyways, its a comparative price point to look at.

If I were making a deal, sight unseen, I'd maybe work around the $10 each mark if I was expecting to have to use at least a portion of them as firewood. They would have to be really really bad, for that.

onebarfly is gonna have to cough up his source. :D If he can buy stock blanks for $10, he doing pretty darn good! One of the few things the West does not have, is a decent supply of "fancy" hardwood lumber.

Take a look at the links down this page http://ww w.martinihenry.com/links.htm

It claims to be a Martini Henry page, but it is a great list of a lot of the smaller scale suppliers around. There are several stock blank suppliers that have plain wood. If you like fancy wood in general, take a look at the gobywalnut site, and try not to get lost looking at the large slabs! :)

I am going to see him this week and I think I am going to pick them up.
I will get some pix later, I have wanted to do some stock work and figure if these are cheap enough it wont hurt so ban when I mess up.

Should see some of his Fancy Grade blanks....WOW

Well... we weren't talking about buying just one board were we? If you wish to drop more than $200.00 on 20 (plain blanks) of wood, then be my guest. I for one, would not. BTW: I have given away nice (but small) walnut blanks here for free on more than one occation.

There is nothing wrong with plain, clear walnut. But how many stock makers would choose plain vs figured wood, given the amount of effort that goes into a custom stock? Desirability is a factor in determining price. Walnut lumber is a different issue - it can be used for many things, furniture making comes to mind.
I have a stack of clear, straight grained, well seasoned walnut planks. Could be profiled for stocks, or resawn and milled into lumber. But I wouldn't think that such blanks would be all that valuable or desirable.

Boyds sells plain blanks in the States for about $45 each. Way over priced IMO. I would not pay any more than 10 bucks each.

Where do you get your blanks at $10 each? I'd like to buy some at that price, share your source information, immediately!

And plain clear walnut is usually superior in strength with fewer warpage issues when compared to more highly figured wood.

heck at $10 for a rifle stock blank, i'd pick one up, and not for a rifle, but some revolver grips. and i'd have a TON of practice blocks too at that size.

Nope, definitely not talking about buying just one board.

And I'm not saying cheap is a bad thing, necessarily, either. 20 blanks, of sizes suitable for making stocks, for $200, would amount to a SCREAMING deal. I won't claim I wouldn't pay it and be happy, if the chance was offered to me, but it amounts to less than I would consider a fair price, if I were dealing with a friend and was looking for a price point to be offering.

The board foot price for plain lumber, or maybe a little more, would be about the top end of what I would be willing to pay for lumps large enough to cut a stock from, if I only wanted one, but would represent a reasonable price point to sell them for one at a time.
It also represents an accepted value, in that it is what the market seems willing to carry, for walnut that is able to be cut up into blocks, chunks or boards, for woodworking hobby folks to use for things other than stock making.
An ad posted on the local Craigslist, or in the local Bargain paper, will as like as not, find more than enough buyers to clear out the wood, if it comes right down to that. If postage costs more than the wood, well, that has happened before. It just boils down to whether the buyer thinks that his cost, delivered, is worthwhile.

Anyways, it's all about establishing some reference points, rather than a price.

I'm waiting to see the pictures!:D
