Belt feed m14 legality?

belt feed semi auto center fire rifles have no legal limit read you PAL book or call the cfo if you think deferently.

Isn't the pre 1945 design only for the belk/links?

If the modern conversion kit used the cloth or metal links from a pre-1945 design, it would likely be legal.

The only problem I can see is the 7.62x51 didn't exist prior to the late 50's, and I believe the 30-06 links are in fact slightly different.

IIRC, Johnone had recieved the opinion that the 1919 Browning convesrion to 7.62x51 did not qualify as pre-45.

I think I read somewhere that the 30-06 links could work with 7.62X51 or am i mistaken?

As noted, the belt has to be for a pre-'45 firearm. A 1919A4 semi in 7.62x51 is not be a problem, in and of itself, but the belts would have to be for a pre-'45, and as pointed out, that can be a problem; belts were not designed then for 7.62x51.
If a conversion system was available for the M1A or m305, it would be quite legal, BUT it would have to use pre-'45 design belts, if more than 5 rounds were to be loaded - and there are none intended for 7.62x51. IF a belt for another calibre would work, fine.
Having said that, a belt fed conversion for one of these rifles would be quite a piece of work. I would suggest that you look at a few belt fed guns' feeding systems, look at a M305's, and then ask yourself howinhell a belt feed conversion could be made to work.

Here is the dirt from the Department of Justice site, as usual it is up to your own interpretation :

Former Cartridge Magazine Control Regulations

(1) Any cartridge magazine

(a) that is capable of containing more than five cartridges of the type for which the magazine was originally designed and that is designed or manufactured for use in

ii) a semi-automatic firearm other than a semi-automatic handgun,

(2) Paragraph (1)(a) does not include any cartridge magazine that

(f) is of the “belt” type consisting of a fabric or metal belt, is not a reproduction and was originally designed or manufactured for the purpose of feeding cartridges into a automatic firearm of a type that was in existence before 1945.

I believe it could be done if the belt could be placed under the bolt with a round in the ready to be chambered position,
and the forward movement of the bolt would properly strip the cartridge from the disintegrating links.

Not your classic top opening to load machine gun, but it could still possibly work.

And of course the links wouldn't through the same path as the cartridge, the would need to drop out the mag well or out a hole made in the stock.

You are thinking of push through disintegrating links. As opposed to pull out. Which pre-'45 ones would you use?

That's the only problem I'm seeing, I'm not exactly sure how the links work, if You actually need to push the round through the disintegrating links before cambering the rounds as opposed to being abbe to take them off by pushing forward on the top edge of the cartridge, then its gonna be a lot harder, if even possible.

CANUCK223;
You are partialy correct.
For the belts to be more than 5rds they must be for use in a weapon designed before 1945....
SO if you were to adapt the M-14 to belt fed using the conventional cloth belt for the .30-06 (yes it works in 7.62 nato) no problem....
However if you designed your system to use the M-60 links for that caliber you are limited to 5rds....
Caliber is irrelevant it is the belt that matters....
That is why both the links and belts (.30-06) can be used in the 1919a4.
However if you have the same gun that was modified to feed M-60 type linked ammo, you are limited.
Hope that explains it
John

If you want a belt fed call marstar & buy one
You are not going to make a 1022 or a M14 belt fed
Unless you truly have more money than brains

I wouldn't be throwing much money at it. The idea is low-ish cost and to have something to tinker with or to give other people ideas.

I agree it probably wont happen, but its still possible, why not give it a shot? Even if it is an el-cheopo one.
