Just wondering if anyone here uses a ballistics program for handhelds. I have a new HPaq and have been using my own excel based program but I have been thinking of getting the NightForce software. I know there are others out there so I'm looking for any and all advise on the subject. Which one do you think works best, who carries it and for what price.

Thanks

Dave H

I see this post has come back from the dead!

Since my first post I have done a bit of research and I guess I should share seeing as how I get so much help from this form I'd be lost without it.

I looked at all the choices out there very carefully, all two of them. (I did not know about or Sendaro's recommendation at the time) Night Force and Exbal. I went to TSE and they did not have the night force handheld program in stock at the time but did have it on the PC. They were helpful and showed me how it all worked but I was not all that impressed as it did not have the features I was looking for. I thought maybe the handheld version might but the people I talked to didn't have any experience with it. I decided I'd still give it a try once they got it in, but I wanted to see it running first. The manager (at least I think it was him, he was in the office showing me) said he would load it on his handheld to show me how it worked. Very nice guy! He said it would be in within the month, so being in Edmonton I called down every few weeks for about four months.

In the mean time I was seeing what the exbal program was all about. Unlike the night force they have a website and detailed exactly how their program works including screen shots. I really wanted to try the night force first but while I was waiting for it, exbal introduced some of the features that I was after. After calling the guys at Perry Systems who designed exbal I bit the bullet and ordered it. I am very, very, very happy with the program. It has some features that I didn't even know I wanted. The price is about the same and it took about two weeks to get it.

I highly recommend Exbal but because I know nothing about the night force program it could be just as good. Maybe someone from The Shooting Edge could take a look at the Perry Systems website and do a quick comparison of the two programs. At least list the features of the night force program. Although I probably will not get the night force now, I am still curios how it works and it would probable benefit a lot of people on this site.

BTW the trajectory validation feature in exbal is awesome. You can dial in the software trajectory to your rifle trajectory in as few as three shots at different ranges. That is a must have for me from now on. Google Perry Systems and check it out. And if you want I’ll answer any question as well. I also have the PC version.

I found a couple more free ones for Palm OS on:

w w w.freewarepalm.com

Look under the Calculator/Miscellaneous category:

- one is called Ballistic v1.0
- the other Ballistics! v1.18

The site also has the pSSF (pocket Sharp Shoot Friend) v0.995 mentioned in a previous post.

I haven't given any of them a field test, but they all look pretty decent for free. In fact, I just picked up a used Palm Zire 71 for $30 just so I could run these programs.

Hi All,

I've recently found a new Ballistics app, Gnu Exterior Ballistics Computer, that is Open-Source, Cross-Platform and extremely accurate. When I first came across it, it was only being developed for Windows and Linux but after a little persuading, is now being compiled for Mac OS X as well.

Being a Mac guy, I was a little disappointed to not find any ballistics software built for the Mac platform. Now that GEBC is being developed for OS X, as well as the other platforms, shooting will be much more enjoyable.

I've written a blog post about my journey to get Gnu Ballistics compiled for OS X is anyone is interested, other wise head over to the sourceforge project site and download your free version of this awesome ballistics app.

Cheers,

Hey Everyone,

I wanted to let everyone know that I've just finished developing a ballistics calculator for the iPhone and iPod touch... check out the product page I put together for more info, some screenshots and a demo video.

It is available on the iTunes App Store now, for those of you who are interested.

Cheers,

Although the Nightforce program is Exball I use the Exball it works in my Palm OS no problems

We, Glock and I , both are using the NF version of Exbal in Palm Treo phones, with great results.
We found that many of the "Crackberry" devices would not support the pocket PC version so went with Palm, that happens to also have a cell phone built in.
The programs are updateable through online support with NF and the tech support that NF offers on their program is great.

We stock the NF programs as well.
