Hey guys,

Just wanted to announce that I got a new shotgun, a Benelli M4 :D

Put it together, put 3 drops of the supplied oil on it where I felt it was needed, and fired 25 rounds out of it today. Worked great!

One time after the mag was empty the bolt failed to stay in the rearward position.

Just a question:

I hate leaving springs in their compressed state.

To avoid this with the magazine, leave it empty. If I were to leave the magazine loaded, how long would it take for noticeable degradation in its performance?

As for the bolt, and the firing pin springs, if the bolt is forward, the firing spring is being compressed.

If the bolt is back, then the bolt springs are compressed.

I know that I could get one of those dud bullets with the spring loaded primer.

But, I do know with my bolt guns, that if I pull the trigger as it normally would be cocking, it doesn't ####, leaving the spring uncompressed.

Can anything be done with the M4 like that?

Also, what is the approx lifetime of those springs if they are left compressed, I don't want anything exact or firm, just a approximate range, like less than a year, 1-5, 5-10, 10-25, whatever it may be.

Thanks guys!!

edit: Also, do you get trader rating just from other members, or is it from site sponsors as well...? Thanks x 2

I hate leaving springs in their compressed state.

Why? Use wears them, not being in either a compressed or uncompressed state.

You can get them from either but I've yet to have a dealer leave me one thus far.

For the firing pin, I leave a dummy round in the chanmber and pull the trigger. So this way, no spring stays compressed and no risk related to the dry firing with an empty chamber. As for the spring in the mag, well I leave it empty so no need to worry about it. :)

My 2 cents.

Hmph. Now that I think about it, what you say does make sense.

I will contact the dealer and see if they will :D

Dummy round... much better name for it lol.

Does a fired shotshell do just as good of a job as one of those purchaseable dummy rounds?

Or is there a way to stop the firing pin from catching as you release the bolt...? Either would suffice for me.

I suppose if it doesn't matter as to wether or not the spring is compressed, I shouldn't need either anyways :) Would still be nice to know.

Thanks guys!

With my Benneli semis just pull the bolt back about a third of the way ( with no round in the chamber ) and pull the trigger to release the hammer. It will catch on the bolt and just ease it ahead. I only use snap caps in my O/U's

post pics

haha ok ok I will bring my cam home from work tomorrow and post some pics :)

I tried that, and it definately releases the hammer. Doing that causes no harm?

Thanks Rem3200,

and thanks for the extra work Onagoth :p

AhhhhH!! Sorry guys, totally forgot about this thread till now. I took some pics though... finally

here they are:

Now being the time that I had some questions to ask about it hehe.

Ok, first off, do the gas pistons rattle from vertical shaking in all these..?

Second, its having trouble cycling el cheapo target loads. The specs on those are:

Winchester Super-Target
12 Gauge
2-3/4 "
1200FPS
3 Dram
1-1/8 oz.
#7.5 Lead Shot

Anyone else have trouble/success with something equivalent...? Anything that can be done to allow firing of those?

Last question, the sling is a tac star sling designed for pistol gripped shotguns. That's what the box said. Can anyone tell me if that looks correct?

Thanks guys, enjoy the rather late pics.

Sweet shotgun. I don't know much about the M4, but my Beretta XtremaII called for a break in period using heavy loads. First thing I did was put two boxes of 3-1/2" magnums through it. It's never had a jam or trouble cycling - even on the lightest loads available. Perhaps that's all you need...just get out and do some more blasting :dancingbanana:!

Thanks guys! I really do enjoy it so far, and I'm not expecting that to change.

Calum: I'm sure you'll be happy.

Caboose: Once it gets a little warmer out I definitely will :) I've got ~150 rounds through it already, and I bought 2 boxes of 12 gauge, 3 inch, 1550 FPS, 1-1/8 oz. #2 bird for that reason. Was the cheapest, strongest stuff at WSS.

Another question, now I might be dreaming here, but is there such a thing as cheap shotgun slugs...? I'd love to shoot slugs often... but at a buck a pop... :(

As I'm new to autoloading shotguns especially a new'ish design like the M4, take what I say with a salt lick, a tequila shooter and a beer chaser. :D

This is a combat shotgun. It was desined for buck and slug only. What the hell are you doing shooting target loads of 7.5 in it? It is a bad idea unless you are specifically trying to practice clearing jams and cycling problems.

The solution, stop shooting bird shot in a combat shotgun. :D

Cheap Slugs

The only way you can put "slugs" and "cheap" in the same sentence is to get a mold, cast your own and reload them.

I reload LEE slugs that I cast myself. For casual range use they are okay, but out a smooth bore the accuracy seems to fall off at around 50 yards. Out to 30 yards I can get a ragged hole for five shots if I do my part.

I'll skip the salt lick, do just a few tequilas while in Mexico, and eat a lime for fun :)

:p lol if I remember correctly it was also designed to be able to fire "light loads" .. and I was shooting clays, it was 60 bucks for 250 rounds. Even if I have to shoot 'em all one at a time, I couldn't resist. :D

Once its nice enough outside so that I can take my time, I will savor some slugs/buck out of it.

Thanks for the info, that's sorta what I figured :(

I suppose I will have to look into reloading them then. I currently don't reload anything.. as my collection has basically just begun.

ENIGMATIC1,
For cheaper slugs and buck you might want to try Wally World. Last year I bought both for under $3.00/5 box. Winchester Super-X brand. Not on sale. That seemed to be their regular price. About a month ago I went looking for some more 00. Out of stock, but they had Power Point Slugs for a little over $3.00. I have never seen them that cheap anywhere else.

I want to show up to the skeet range with one of those....

I plan on this summer lol :D

Hmmm... Thats a really good idea! Thanks Covey.

For some reason, when thinking "ammo" I never seem to remember to try the store that has everything.
