Hi,
I'm taking my RPAL exam on Saturday and will be getting my first handgun in the new year! I need something that is reliable and wont burn a whole through my pocket. I am a student so im looking at <$400 for the gun.

I'm interested in the Tokarev TT33 7.62x25 ($250) because the ammo is readily available and very cheap, $225 for 2280 rounds. Total of $475

Im also looking at the Walther P1 from Trade Ex ($225 on special) in 9mm. Is it reliable? 9mm goes for $265 for 1000rds at marstar. For total of $490

What do you guys recommend? and is there anything else out there using the 7.62x25 round?

I suggest a 38 Spl revolver and you can buy reloads for it. More pleasent to shoot.

The Toc shoots a very hot round that could cease to be fun. Some indoor ranges would not permit such a hot FMJ round.

Your best choice would be something like a Ruger 22 semi. Cheap to shoot and very accurate. Learn how to shoot.

I've got the Tokarev and the surplus ammo certainly is a hot round...fun, cheap, but ugly.

The Walther is an excellent piece of craftsmanship and while 9mm is more expensive the Walther is far classier.

I'd go for the Walther, probably because I already have the Tok.

question is somewhat pointless. You will proly end up having both of them given enough time...

stop worrying about it your likely to end up with both of them anyway in a few months.
guns are like lays potato chips, you cant have just one!!

i got my first pistol home 4 weeks ago (norc 54 7.62 & 9mm ) i love it.
but i am all ready shopping for something else .22 or .45 doesnt matter which one first because i am going to end up with both eventually

Depends on what you want to do with it.
I would suggest that you get out to the club - you are going to have to belong to one if you are going to be shooting a handgun - and try some different guns. Most shooters are willing to help out a beginner.
If you want to learn to shoot, get a decent .22, as Ganderite has suggested. The pistol and a load of ammunition will be less than the amounts you mentionned. Learn how to shoot it. When you have become a proficient shot, and if you want something else, go for it. If you don't want to keep the .22, you will be able to sell it. Your education will be inexpensive.
You could start with the TT33, the P1, a plain jane Smith .38. Won't make it any easier to learn to shoot, and every shot will cost more.

P1

Hi

As stated before a nice used 38 special revolver will be much more accurate & easier to shoot for a bigginer but if you really want one of these two here my comment.

TT-33 is mabe cheap to shoot but it have a serious muzzle blast & flash with Czech ammo. It not a fun shooter for every one. It's a real attention getter when you shoot that in a indoor range.

P1 is much better made but you may need to test couple of brands/weight a ammo to have it works correclty http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=177897

P1 also tend to shoot low with 115 Grs bullet 124 Grainer are better.

If you reload & already have brass. Reloading 9mm Is about same price as surplus 7.62 x 25

My 2 cents

There is no rule that says you have to start with a .22. If you want to start with the Tok or Walther, go right ahead! I would go with the Walther, 9mm will always be available and on sale somewhere! And you can more easilly start reloading 9mm than 7.62. Like others have said thoug, you will end up getting both eventually.

You could also look at a 9mm Tok. You do find some once in a while with a 9mm barrel included or available for a little extra, the best of both worlds.

I can't speak too much to the Walther except that it is on my list of cool old guns to buy, but I can say I love my Tokarev. Yes, that ammo is hot and it puts on quite a show. You'll have some misfires because it heats up and the ammo you are looking at is shellacked. I don't mind because I enjoy dealing with old, broken things. If you want a perfect shooting experience I would say the TT33 isn't it. If you want a bit of fun and the odd challenge you'll probably love it.
