Glock "C" models compensator

A friend of mine just acquired a 17C [CORRECTION: 34C] in 9mm. Not being familiar with them I wondered what the large rectangular cutout was behind the front sight. According to the website, there are supposed to be two longitudinal slots behind and either side of the front sight which act as a compensator, which sort of makes sense. But this:

seems a little odd for the purpose intended. Good place for dirt to get in!

Any comments from the Glocknoscenti out there?

without researching myself, im not sure of this but the 17C i saw at a local gun shop has like you said, the two parralel slots on the top of the slide. ive never seen the full open one

That looks G34-ish. The contoured slide.

Now that I'm awake (6:15 am- why?) the other odd thing I just realized about my friend's is that there are no ports in the barrel.

I just cheked with my friend and his IS a Model 34. I didn't look carefully myself and my friend got his models wrong. Still, lightening the slide doesn't make sense to me unless it is a manufacturing expediency to be able to use the same recoil spring on several models.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe that all of the long slide glocks have that cutout in the top of the slide (compensated or not), this is to reduce the weight of the slide to the same as the regular sized glocks.

Front sight, not rear sight.

And his model isn't compensated, but you guys already figured that out.

Ye gods... I am REALLY out of it today! Yes, of course it is the front sight.
I've corrected the post to read correctly. Sigh...
