Deer, Elk, Moose and Black Bear are the game.

Area: Foothills and mountains, brush and meadow, Grizzly bear areas,

Ranges: 100 -300yrds

What calibre is the best and why? Recoil benefits or cons are not an issue

7mm Rem Mag, 280 remington, 7mm 08 Remington

Guys I know that hunt elk and moose regularly seem to favour Magnums. Usually 30 cal. So I would say the 7 mm Rem, if you normally hunt big animals. I think bigger is better for grizzly bear, elk etc.. If recoil was a consideration, then 280. My .02

I'd go with the .280, in a nice Mountain rifle package. like the LSS Mtn 700.

.280 doesn't give up anything in a practical sense to the 7mm mag, but handles heavier bullets better (should your rifle not like Gate_house's magical TSX ;) ) then the 7-08

Like Gatehouse said, it doesn't matter. Stick a good bullet in any of them, and you're set.

Personally, my choice has been the 280, but it's no better than the others given the parameters you outline.

7mm RM....more power......more bullet choices but all will get the job done with the right bullet!

They're all 7mms - bullets are all the same for any of them, but I'd take the Rem Mag though they're all very capable out to 300 and the differences don't amount to a hill of beans within those ranges. Magnum or the .280 allows for a 175 to be seated well enough yet still allows for plenty of powder not that I ever met anybody shooting over a 160-165 in a 7 of any kind. Always been a lot of comparisons between the .280 and the 7 Mag, bottom line is they're pretty close, about as close as the 7-08 is to the .280. Have a real soft spot for the 7-08 - a great caliber to shoot - but I own a 7 Mag and it gets the nod when distances start getting more open. The .280's really a 7mm-06 by another name - couldn't ask for a better designed parent case. Ask Jim Carmichael...

How about a .280 AI? Near 7 mag performance but more efficient. No belt, less boom, and factory brass is available from nosler. My cooper .280ai should be here in a couple weeks and I can't wait!

Sealhunter,
What happened to your "Oldy but goody 30-30"? One season in the west change your mind?:p

Stop, you're upsetting me:redface:

I used my 30/30 this season and will for many more, I'm just broadening my horizon a little bit.(with much trouble as you can tell)
While I talk about these "other" guns, my 30/30 won't even come in the same room:D

I am looking at buying another few rifles over the next year, but it is so hard when I am such a die hard fan of the ones I already own for the type hunting I do. I am going to try a few different rifles, just for a little while, I will crawl out of my box, ... it's scary out there, in new Rifle land

Yup, they are all 7mms but overall length becomes a factor with the 7mm08 when you start getting into heavier and higher bc bullets, just as it does with the .308. While you have never met anyone shooting over 165 grain bullets from a 7mm, there are longrange shooters that routinely use 175 and even 180 grain bullets.
