Well I just did my first bedding job and every thing went fine so far. I am at the waiting stage where I need it to harden up so I can trim excess from around the outside of the action. I hit it with the rubber mallet tomorrow. But I must say that everything went well and big thanks to all who have posted here in the past , on how to bed an rifle.
I just have one question I might have not put enough harder in the mix .
I am using Marine Tex. I will know better tomorrow but I think I have a gun full of Goo !!

The mix is easy for the marine tex.

If your doing a full bedding you use 1/2 the Putty and 1/2 the hardener in the vial. Couldn't be easier really.

As cheap as the stuff is ($17) even if I was doing a skim bed I would mix 1/2 of the stuff just to make sure the mix was right.

The Marine Tex is quite runny in it's mixed state, unless you let it start to kick over before using it, I don't know how you would use the stuff as per the instructions. They state you can mold it with your fingers and shape it etc...but like I said, you would have to let it start to kick over.

My biggest worries once the action is taped into the stock are: "Did I get the release everywhere I should have" and "Am I sure I plugged ALL the little holes that could cause it to mechanical lock into the stock". I have ripped a freshly bedded action out of a stock because I had forgotten to plug the hole for the drift pin that holds the bolt release, what a mess that was to clean up. 1hr later I had it bedded back into the stock though :D

The marine tex that I have is 5:1 mix.

The marine tex in the single use package is already ratioed for you. 1 vial of hardener to 1 container of the putty.

If you use 1/2 the container of the putty....you would use 1/2 the vial of hardener.

I didn't say to use a 1:1 mixture of putty to hardener.

So does mine but that directions are on the 14 oz contaner and the 2 oz size says as CyaN1de said mix all together. I have both ( did not think 2 oz was enough Wrong ) any way I mixed my small container 5 to 1 and after waiting 2 hrs I figured it should have set up enough to cut some of the ooze coming uo from the sides but it was still too tacky almost wet. Thats when I started to worrie . How ever when I checked this afternoon it was hard as a rock and it snaped out just like in the little mov on you tube. Yessssss it worked great and I am very happy about that.
So next I guess is a range test. And if we get some good wheather I will do just that.
I'll try and post some pics.

Doesn't look too bad for your first, but did you bed the rear tang? And you should wait atleast a couple days before shooting the rifle so it can completely set up.

O.k, I have the bulk type I guess, 5:1.

I have had excellent results with it.

We are all a bit nervous waiting for the moment of truth.

I bed a rifle after dinner and before going to bed I put an allen key on the two action screws and break them loose.

Then I open up rifle in the morning.

I read somewhere that on the Savages you should free float the rear tang .... thats what I did with mine, shoots good.

Thats the same as I read to not do the tang. I will find out at the range. And if I have to I can bed it later. ( I hope ) LoL.
I used neutral floor paste Johnston I think and it worked real well not a worry at all. It is all I will use now.

Is the marine tex pretty much the same as devcon? Any reason one is better than the other or is it just what is avaliable locally?

TIA

I've tried just about all of the bedding compounds on the market. All of them were suitable for the job at hand. All though when I tried a product called Pro-Bed 2000 I was very impressed, so much so that I secured the rights to distribute it in Canada. It was developed by a gunsmith with the sole purpose of bedding rifles in mind. Simple easy to use and the results are excellent!

I hope all is well with your project!

I've used Brownells Acraglass (Regular and Gel), Bisonite and Devcon 10110. Of the 3, I much prefer Devcon. It mixes 9:1 resin to hardener by weight. The resin is a thick paste, so all you have to do is place a cardbord container on a scale, zero the scale, add the approximate volume of amount of resin you think you need and wight it. Divide the result by 9, add an amount of hardener required to bring the overall weight to the sum of the two. It may sound complicated but is rather easy when looking at the following photos. The prepared paste is very easy to apply and won't run out. I use Kiwi shoe polish and rub it to a thin layer on metal parts to be bedded but leave a thick coat on other parts.

If I recall properly on Paper Devon Steel has the similar compression strength as MarineTex (grey) having a slightly higher compression stregth. Shear strength I recall Devon Steel comes out on top with a higher shear resistance. Look at the spec sheets that they have online. Both IMO are excellent for bedding and it just comes down to availability.

Acraglass/gel is the easiest to clean IMO with vineger and water.

Locally I could find both, but the Marine store was the closest.
