I've read that with my M14 I should be sticking to ~170gr or lighter bullets, lots of use with heavier bullets can result in bad stuff with the gas/piston system.

What about in an AR platform? I picked up a .308 R25 with a 1-10" twist barrel, so it got me curious to try out some of the heavier long range bullets (175, 200, 210 and 220gr HPBTs). However because it's a semi-auto I don't want bad things to happen.

So should I limit the bullet weight due to increased pressures, or because this is not a piston system, are the higher weights fine?

No need to worry in the R-25. You're not moving any parts, just pushing gas around. Shoot whatever you like. A short barrel will just mean those heavier bullets will drop off quicker as you'll not produce as much velocity.

I have a 16" HBAR 1/9 and have shot it at 100/200 yards. The 55 gr. FMJ I used were very inconsistant. I used alot of 69 gr. & 77 gr. BTHP Federal Match with excellent result (sub moa) 77 gr. would be great for 200-500 yards

A heavier bullet does not 'long range' make
Generally... 175gr is the used the most because it works - distance and accuracy. With those huge bullets you want to try you are taking case volume away in order to fit the Overall length. Less powder - less velocity - less distance...
A 155gr shoots about 500'ft/sec faster than a 200gr
155gr shoots phenomenal (sub-moa) even @ 700+yards
