Sitting around the office the other day, the subject of 7.62x39 caliber AR15s came up. Not being deeply involved in the black gun market am 1st to confess I have limited knowledge of all the variants and stuff other makers have offered.
So my question is , does anyone know if mags and uppers exist for an AR15 in 7.62x39 caliber.
Yes I am thinking of another project.
Thanks for any help.

The base of the 7.62 is too big - bolt integrity is an issue in the long run. When you run corrosive ammo, all the corrosive crap got blown into the gas tube and the unreachable holes in the Bolt group.

C- product does make a 30rds 7.62 mag , IMHO, it is a flop becasue it curves way too much for existing magazhine pouches. Loading is a problem too because of the AR system. When you have a banana mag, it is easier to use AK leverage system to seat the mag.

If anything, it needs to use AK mags but the feeding path needs to be rethought.

You might as well build a 7.62 conversion kit for XCR - with a lower that takes AK mag instead.

If I can shoot $200 cases of ammo, as opposed to $800-$1000 cases. I won't really care if I have to replace my gas tube once inawhile and I don't use mag pouches while shooting at the range.

There would be a strong -civilian- market for these I think.

remember - Simon Cowell said No to Daughtry and someone here (look above) said "I really dont see the point of making lowers" :) (and you know how many orders you got-wholesale and retail)

Anyone looking for a cheap rifle to shoot has it in the CZ. No point in building a $2000 rifle to shoot cheap, corrosive ammo.

It's about the last caliber that I'd ever choose to convert an AR to.

X2.

That is the point. Having a good rifle that shoots cheap ammo!

After a few cases...you pretty much paid for the rifle. Should be a no-brainer on this one.

5 cases of x39, about $1000
5 cases of...?? PMC .308 $4250!!! Norinco .308 $2500

If it's a gas piston wouldn't it be fine to shoot this ammo? I wanted one two in this caliber but have no idea how to get one. Wolverine was looking into it for me but I haven't got no price quote or even if they could get it in. Were you thinking about creating one?

There are a few companies making 7.62X39 barrels

As far as the dreaded bolt breakage there are good 7.62 bolts and not so good. The MGI bolt is generally considered GTG. Having said that I have been running a inferior DPMS for over 2000K and seems to be chugging along. I Magnufluxed ( dye penetrant ) it recently and it looks fine .

If you doubt you can open a AR style bolt to a 7.62X39 and have a reliable bolt you need to talk to Bill Alexander from Alexander Arms...6.5 Grendel, 50 Beowulf etc....( he is very eager to share his knowledge ). The reason you don't see 6.5Grendel bolts failing all the time is all the 6.5Grendel bolts that come with ( Saber, JP Rifle, Satern etc ) all the Grendel barrels are from his him. That is part of the licencing agreement. You can't buy a 6.5Grendel without using his bolts

Bottome line is its ok to have a large bolt face, you just need to use a good bolt !

This is the same for the 458 socom that is open all the way to a 308 case boltface

As far as magazines, the whole discussion of the 30rd CP mags not fitting in mag pouches is laughable since we pin them to 5 anyways. 5 mags will feed fine out of standard AR mags BTW.

You can also use the readily available 6.5 Grendel mags. Mine run flawless with 7.62X39

As far as corrosive ammo goes, I can see why you don't want to do all the scrubbing in the bolt and carrier group ( I hate cleaning guns ). Don't care about the gas tube since they are $15. I use a chrome carrier now so it wipes out easy. The inside of the reciever is give it a quick scrub with a toothbrush and it seem to be working fine

I would say this is the only downside of a 7.62 X 39

The other downside would be since ammo is cheap, you tend to blow way more off so you really don't save money in the long run !

I have a 20" D.P.M.S. barrel mounted to an old Colt A2 upper with a Bushmaster
lower. Shoots very well out to 300m and actually shoots quite amazing groups at 200m. Sight picture is a 6 o'clock hold on our regular 18" wide, 22" high target with a 6" inner and 12" outer. Used this rifle in a match in mid summer and I was quite supprised at how accurate it was. I have a good supply of mostly non corrossive chinese ammo so that heavy cleaning has not been an issue.

Gents:

I appreciate I am a new commer here, however my thoughts are that, from a civilian shooting stand point, cheaper pre-assembled readily available ammo mean more trigger time. The last case of 223/5.56 I bought cost me $600/1k plus tax. Granted this is quality ammo, but at roughly double the cost it does give on pause.

I truly see the cleaning downside for direct impingement, and is the main reason I have not perused this. However, if one goes to a piston system, I believe these "Action cleaning issues" become a moot point, and viable option for shooting this ammo becomes an alternative worth pursuing. Both from a Rifle maintenance and brass retention stand point.

Just my Two cents

I was wrong looking at prices per boxes of 20, didn't consider 500+ boxes.
