I have been looking for a mountain rifle and the Kimber 84M caught my eye it comes in 3 caliber that interest me. First is a 257 Roberts which I figure might be a little small if I run into a grizzly up on the mountain. Second is the 7-08 Remington I figure this is the flatest shooting out of the pick and I figure with a good bullet I shouldn't have any issue if I run into a big bear. Third is a 308 well this is a great all around caliber but I think the recoil of a 168 grain bullet in a rifle that weight just 6lbs 2oz scope might be a little heavy for the gain of the 30 caliber bullet. Note this will be for Sheep/Goats and the odd deer maybe.

Help me pick thanks for you time

7-08 is the best because I have one. How come you dont have the option to buy a stevens instead. They shoot amazing and only cost like $300. You could spend the rest on optics, pepsi and roast chicken flavored chips.

Wish they offered a few more cartridge choices......like a .270WSM but of the ones they have the 7mm-08 is a no brainer.

You could always go to lighter bullets in the .308 and end up with vitually identical recoil if it interests you but if you mean sheep/goat rifle when you say mountain rifle then I'd pick the 7mm-08 regardless.

I just saw a stainless A7 in 7/08. Think it might be under the tree for my teenager this Xmas. Much the same thought process as your post.

I command you to buy a 257Roberts and try it out, so I can make my own decision based on that. :)

I suggest you email Kimber and ask them about their warranty coverage here in Canada.

I do not own a kimber so I have not checked it out, but a few who have them claim that Kimber does not authorize anyone in Canada to do warranty work?

It seems you want to go with short action to keep weight down etc.
i just sold my custom 700 rem in 7mmwsm weight 6.6lbs I found recoil was quite noticble, My next build will be Rem 700 action, 24" Hart barrel in a win 284, love the 7mm bullet and the great choices.

The 84M is only offered in a short action.......

They do offer the 270 WSM. It's just called the 8400. The WSM cases couldn't physically fit in the 84 action so they designed an action around those specific cartridges.

So what you're saying is that they don't offer the 270wsm in the 84M then? ;)

8400 is about a pound heavier isn't it?
