Re-barreling a Ti

Would it work to re-barrel a 700 Ti in 260 Rem to 284 Win., or is the action too short ?
Many years ago I had a Mod 88 Win in 284 and it seemed like a nice all around cartridge, fairly versatile and easy to reload with good results.
 
They are both short actions, so I can't see there being a problem. I am not sure if the 284 has a rebatted rim, or if you will need to modify the bolt as the 284 is a wider cartridge. You may need to modify your magazine box and follower, but I am sure one of the Remington boys will pipe up with the required info.
 
It will work but the action is short if you want to get the full potential out of the .284 case. Long bullets will have to be seated quite deep into the case for feeding.

Thats about what I thought, trouble is I don't know what to do with it as in 260 its not working out too well.....the only bullet weight it will shoot well is a 120 gr., anything heavier just doesn't group and some bullets even keyhole at 100 yds. This after I've tried dozens of bullet / powder/ brass/ primer combinations. The gun is mechanically ok with a good scope and mounts, so I'm thinking the twist may have something to do with it at 1 in 9 because my 6.5x55 has a 1 in 8 and it will shoot awesome groups with any weight of bullet.
I'm open to any suggestions for rebarreling, but I don't need any of the other 308 family as I already have most.
 
Rebarrel it in 260AI with an 8 twist barrel.
I know how you love AIed cartridges:p
We have done several of these now and have had about the same results as with the 338LAI just on a smaller scale.:D
The 284 is a neat caliber but as Dennis said, to get the full potential out of it a long action is needed.
 
Anything the 7-08AI will do, the standard cartridge will do minus about one percent. The same is true of the 260. I'm surprised yours won't handle heavier bullets as the cartridge was developed with the 140 but the answer is to use an eight inch twist. I think all 6.5's should use an eight anyway and don't know why Remington went with a slower twist.
Like others who have responded, I don't really like the 284 in a short Remington unless the magazine box is lengthened (add money!). Regards, Bill.
 
1) Re-barrel it with a .260 1:8 twist, in a slightly heavier contour.
2) Re-barrel to .338Fed or 7mm-08...
3) Sell it and move on...:)
 
You can also lengthen the magazine box and open up the receiver a bit for a longer COL, that helps with the 284 length issue. Brownells sells the box, the rest is machine work. Sometimes there are feeding issues that need massaging to make the 284 case feed, although a SAUM follower will help with this as well. The 284 will outrun the 7mm-08 handily, and the AI version as well. It is basically the 280 Rem (ballistically) in a short action. - dan

You clearly are for more knowledgable than I am, but wasn't the 260 meant to be mated with the new load they deeveloped for the 125gr partition? That was the combo I shot in both my 260's with great success on both targets and game.
 
With it being a Ti the assumption I make is you still want to keep it as a light carry rifle. Lightweight contour .284 tube and chamber it in 7mm-08 and don't look back. Perfect cartridge for a short action lightweight rifle.
