ok is there a list some where that can tell me what cal of rifle most people are using and what types of cal are not good for this type of shooting

"...for this type of shooting..." For what type of shooting? The target shooting world is about as varied as a sport can get. There is something for everybody.
Each course of fire has its own rules for what rifles can be used. Some use heavy barreled, single shot, .308, bolt actions with iron sights only and specific ammo. Some are any rifle-any sight-any ammo. Plus .22 LR and black powder target shooting. I've never seen a list, but the DCRA covers most of 'em.

What Humptyjumed said but for me the 6mm and the quite popular 65/284 will slowly fade to the strait win .284 recoil is managble and barrel life is good, not like the 1000 that the 65/284 lasts, and the big boys will shoot the 7mm wsm.customs. the 6mm are great but they don't shoot in the bad winds at 1000 as well as the 7mm in my opinion.

ALL cals (minus under 22cal, 25 and 27) have been used for LR shooting. Just depends on the style of match and class you want to shoot in.

You need to be a whole lot more specific. Or visit 6mmBR.com and benchrestcentral for what people are using in their sport of choice.

my vote goes for the .284 bore, decent weight bullets to buck the wind, high BC, moderate recoil depending on the case you go with to push it. and last of all like was mentioned prior better barrel life than the 6 and 6.5 cals.

For paper punching out to 400 yards I use a 22-250. I use the same rig for Coyotes and all other types of varmint hunting.

If you want to go a little longer than I would suggest a 308, or 6.5-284. There are about a million other cartridges too, these are just the ones I see the most guys shooting right now.

How did I know that you'd be the guy to answer that question?

I was thinking of a 6.5mm as a LR Varmint rifle. Built of a Savage action, natch. What's the wisdom with regard to the 2 a/n chamberings? Better choices available or could they be fun choices?

Both have expensive components and dies. The Creedmore will have 'one' brass manf and Hornady doesn't make the toughest of cases.

The Grendel fits a very particular niche which it is supposed to do a decent job. The case is too small to get real velocity for LR shooting.

Both can be formed from readily available brass if you don't mind a bit of work.

Both will go bang, be accurate and like any chambering...fun.

Neither is ideal in my books. Here I reserve for the 260Rem or improved versions but then you may not need to use a heavy bullet nor want the shorter barrel life.

As a poodle puncher, I think the 260R or improved would be wonderful with a Berger or Amax. For a PD rifle, a bit much unless you really want to go LR.
