Couldn't find the December purchases, so had to start my own thread..
Latest purchase to add to the collection.
Is there any ex FCS Tech or equivelent that may have a manual lying around for sale, or photocopy???? I'm still learning about this PAS4 IR unit. And looking for battery packs, etc. Obviously the original packs will need to be re-built, but that's OK and what it's all about.:D
Made by Varo in 1962. Model 9903.
Note the specific FNC1 mount. Still allows use of the iron sights.
The pictures seem like the back of the light is silver/chrome, it isn't. They are black paint as is the rest of the unit. Must have been some reflection.

I haven't been able to look through it yet, but I'm assuming there is a reticule, as there is windage and elevation adjustment knobs. Gotta find batteries, or at least what is the voltage/amps, etc. so I can make a power source.

there was one in the case at Ancaster GS last sunday in real nice shape he was asking $750.00 but it's too close to Christmas for me to pick up any new toys

OK.. So I hate all you that can have FN's then you have to go out and add those kind of toys... I hate you I hate you I hate you....

PS No I don't hate you... I hate myself I had the license and the opportunity just didn't buy one...

Koldt- that is one beautiful rifle!

BTW, I have sent an email to the gentleman who was selling the same scope at Ancaster, asking for info if he has the manual. If I get a reply I'll let you know.

Thank you very much for that. I mentioned to OLD RSM, that unfortunately there just isn't a mega mall store that one can go to, to locate some of this stuff. So it's only through contacts such as this, that we can keep some of this old stuff alive.

Thanx again.

I got an answer from him and he's getting the manual soon. If he says to I'll give you his email addy.

Cantom, thanks for checking.

Here's a couple more pics of what came after the PAS-4.

We see this unit, AN/PVS 502, a little more frequently. This is considered 1st gen starlight. However it is considered by most, that have NV and on the night vision boards, to be the best 1st gen that was made. Very comparable if not identical in image resolution to the US PVS 4 which is 2nd gen.

Amazingly good value for the dollar.

Yes, this 502 works very well. It uses the N batteries that can be found at any Radio Shack. Same batteries as used in one of the Eotech models.

How well can you see.... As with any NV depending on how much moon/ambient light. I have used this scope to engage targets out to 800m at our range. However you could almost read a book that night with the moon. I believe it to be a great night vision scope.

Here it is mounted on my AR. I took off the FNC1 mount and got an ARMS mount used for a STANAG rail. Works perfectly. Until you get into $3000 gen3 ie. PVS14, 7B, etc, you aren't going to get any better, especially for the price. Soviet stuff doesn't even rate next to this. It may be 1970's technology, but it's great. Also made by Varo.

I remember having the 502 on a winter exercise in Flin Flon Manitoba back in the day. It was -40/-45C without the wind chill the whole time. The thing froze solid, as did our radios didn't work at all- more dead weight to lug around. I also learned that if someone brings a SMG from -40 into a warm tent that it instantly turns white and that taking a dump in these conditions in the great outdoors is no fun at all.

Nice FN by the way.

I had a 502 one time. Under ideal conditions good. There was a guy in Clinton or Walkerton who repaired and sold Starlight and I.R. equipment. I was in his store once, in town on the highway, back in 1994, if he is still around.

Wait a minute...

Isnt that the thing the Germans invented and put on top of a STG44?

The...VAMPIR...?

The whole IR light on top comes off. Then it doesn't look so monsterous. I've got a couple new IR flashlights that are very bright. So I am hoping to get the scope itself working first, then worry about the light with the seperate battery pack going.

Just wait until I take the wood off the C1, and replace it with picattini rail along the forend. I can then replace the buttstock with a Magpul CTR. It'll look good with the new light attached and not this old fashioned junk.

Koldt,

Great ideas for your C1. I've been thinking about doing a "shorty" mod with mine. I figure it'd look pretty sharp, and if it doesn't, well, bah, it's not like I can shoot it anyhow. I'll got get the hacksaw and see what I can put together (or take apart)
