10mm review

Thanks B! :D

i have an ANCIENT website on the 10mm called the 10mm Firearms Page. please note that i haven't updated the page in a long time and i have gotten complaints that there are numerous pop ups that appear due to the nature of the site. have your filters up to block the pop ups as i do not control them at all.

I think the FBI had a number of problems with the 1076 which resulted in a lot of finger pointing between the FBI and S&W over changes to the design of the frame mounted decocker that the FBI has specified.

I believe the 1076's were withdrawn due to these problems and replaced with a variety of guns until the Glock 22 and 23 models were eventually adopted.

The FBI, like many US law enforcement agencies, was quite open to agents carrying their own firearms so revolvers and autos were carried side by side along with personally owned weapons that were on the authorized list. At the Miami Massacre, agents were carrying a mix of .38, .357 revolvers and 9mm autos.

The last revolver issued by the FBI was a 3" .357 Model 13 S&W, perhaps one of the best possible choices for a carry revolver.

BTW, I see P&D has a 1006 in VG condition just popped up on their web site!

well, S&W 1076s did have a problem... due to the FBI's insistence on certain changes to the trigger geometry. not too smart, telling a firearm's manufacturer how they should build a gun. this caused the slide and frames to seize up on some 1076s. a recall was done by S&W and all the FBI and commercial handguns were checked and fixed. the fixed models will have two dots under the decocking lever.

the 1076 was never pulled from service and is still in use by a few agents in the field who love their 1076. as an aside, the FBI is still using the MP5/10 as far as i know.

Here is a comment I dont pass out very often here

S&W developed several 10mm handguns. here is a list of them:

- 1006 / 1066 - 1006 had a 5" barrel and the 1066 had a 4.25" barrel. both are traditional slide mounted decocker saftey models.

- 1026 / 1076 - 1026 had a 5" barrel and the 1076 had a 4.25" barrel. both have a frame mounted decocker with no other external safeties.

- 1046 / 1086 - 1046 had a 5" barrel and the 1086 had a 4.25" barrel. both are DAO with the same action as other S&W DAO... no second strike capability. the 1046/1086 had slight longer slides at the rear than the rest of the models.

there was a few 1016 models made for the FBI trails, which had 3.75" barrel. i have only seen pics of this model and was not made commercially available.

S&W also made the N-Frame revolver model 610 in 3", 4", 5", and 6.5" barrels.

a very very old pic of my 10mm collection... a couple have sold, but i still have most of my 10mms.

Clockwise: couple of Deltas, Witness, 1076, 1006, (missing my 1086 in this pic), Glock 29, 20 (missing my G20C), 610 6.5" (sold it), 610 5" (never selling it), Star MegaStar, Colt Double Eagle... missing a couple others that i have since acquired. oh, the center one is a Bren Ten... almost forgot that one! hehe... :p

The S&W 10mm handguns are pretty soft shooters even with full house loads.

to say i love the 10mm is probably an understatement. :D

I am envious of your 10mm collection sir

PS...the only smith 10mm I have is a 1026

I was always left wondering why most agents couldn't handle 10mm??? Even at top performance it's a pussycat in Glock and S&W pistols. I find it a bit much for muzzle flip in 1911 style pistols but other than that....

And IIRC the FBI actually put in a new order for more MP5\10s in the last couple years. I personally would love to see a quick handling semi-auto 10mm carbine in canada. Closest I have found is the Ruger PC40. Any 10mm auto fan knows that .40 short and weak is 10mm for pansies. My search continues.

wow, great info, thanks for the site mikjk lots of good info on there, im not a huge fan of the 5inch models s&w has made and the 1066 and 1086 with the 4.25inch really apeal to me, i think im going to be on the hunt. the 10mm is quite an interesting cartridge.
great info though , keep it coming the more the better.

:( Unfortunatly before it made it's way to me the hammer was bobbed and the ejectionport flared and lowered, not very well done either.

Still I love to shoot it, and it came with 1000 rnds of ammo, errrr donated pre assembled components.

So if you have a blued delta slide kicking around...........

WOW :eek:that's gorgeous. I've always loved the 10mm.
The first one I ever shot was a 1076, someday I'll own one too;)

One of the big problems with the S&W semi-autos is that they weigh a lot and this is unpopular with some coppers as a carry piece, especially the smaller stature ones. A fully loaded 5946 is a pretty heavy gun for a 9mm. The polymer frame guns are very popular because of the carry weight factor. When you go to the 10mm in the Glock, you get the big frame that few people can handle well. I wonder why they have not brought out a Glock 20 SF like the 21 SF yet?

On the other hand, the North Dakota Highway Patrol went to the .45 4506 with a 5" barrel and it was well liked since its was a single stack (easy to reach for everyone) and the extra weight easily controlled the .45 ACP.

You have got to be kidding me? What an amazing collection!

thanks fellas!

yeah, i was in University when i created that page many, many moons ago. i still have access to change stuff, but it's almost a museum piece...hehe... truth be told, i don't have the time to update it, but i'll get to it someday.

Istarted my pistol collection witha 9mm. Stepped up to a .45. Had a brief and enjoyable interlude with 7.62x25 and now positively love 10mm almost to the exclusion of all other pistol callibers.

It is the most powerfull cartridge that I can shoot proficiently to my knowledge. And I dont mean slow deliberate shooting, but the kind of real, exciting shooting that takes a while to get the hang of.

Its such a perfect ballance of speed and power.

Any more mass or velocity would make take away from it's potent velocity or its just barely manageable recoil with hot loads.

Now if Gunnar could only finish my 10mm Ranger II!!

I have a 1006....luv the thing.....sold my 645 to buy this one.....I'm thinking it needs to go to afford Christmas this year.....i was wondering if anyone here has ever sold at powder keg in Kamloops on consignment?

10mm Photo Fest....

Might as well join in....

Had a .40 S&W barrel fitted to the blued one to take advantage of all the free .40 S&W brass laying around the local ranges.

Chronied some loads last time out, 11.2 grains of blue dot is getting me 1330fps out of my G20 with a 180 JHP. The lack of recoil is the most impressive part.
