BMG .50 , Range regulations etc.

Does anyone have a URL that outlines in detail the requirements required of a firearms range thats suitable for discharge of BMG's? ie: x number of KM's of required backstop etc.

I'm not even sure if the regulations I speak of actually exist or who they are enforced under etc. Some details would be great.

Would suggest checking with your local CPF Office. Our range is only 200 yards, but we are templated for .338 LM & under. The M-other .50 use is verboten .
 
The so called 50 cal saftey template is 6600m long by 1600m wide if my memory serves me correctly...

I am curious what exactly that means? Does the club have to own property that size? thats about 6.6 kilometers long that near impossible here in southern ontario as a conession square is only 2 kilometers long a club would have to buy up property at the cost of 7.5million or so just to shoot 50 cal

My dad made an interesting point... there are no regulations saying that you can't go hunting with your 338 lapua or 50 BMG during the correct rifle season and your discharging the gun then so how does it become so safe to shoot a gun when hunting... The Cfo doesnt come out with a tape after you shot a deer with a 308 and measure to see if you have the correct saftey template.... at least not yet...

I find it funny that the CFC will not approve many ranges for 50BMG yet they figure it is ok to take these dreaded calibers out on public land where there is absolutely NO form of control.
I hunt with my 50s and am very careful about what is behind what I shoot at, but like with any caliber there are sh-t heads who don't think before they shoot.

Many clubs that could be templated for the 50 choose not to be templated and the CFC is more than willing to comply with their wishes.
 
When you hunt or fire a rifle on crown land, YOU are responsible for where/what that bullet does.

When a rifle range is approved, the Feds are on the hook so they will make sure that NOTHING can cause an injury or at least nothing that can come back and nip them in the butt.

A rifle range does not need to own all the land that is in the template. However, that land must have low enough human traffic that there is min. risk of injury.

Our range shoots into a hill so our template is much shorter/smaller because of the angle a shooter would need to clear the hill.

However, our range is not approved for BMG even though it was something I tried to get because IF someone launched a slug over the hill, a bullet COULD land in OK lake a few KM's away and hit a boater.

On the prairies, I am sure they would ensure that there is no civilization/homestead or even public road anywhere in your template.

Yep there are always a few that wreck it for everyone you would think with the price of 50 cal rifles and the cost of shooting them that the owners would be educated and quite wealthy to be playing with such expensive toys but we all know even in the elite parts of society there are always a few deuchbags...
 
You have to have control of the land within the safety template and unless there is a large natural backstop such a mountain, it must posted. The link should answer your questions.
 
Safety templates are drastically effected by the surrounding areas, like Peter said, if your shooting into the side of a cliff your not gonna need a lot of restrictions but over an open prarie things would be drastically different.

Of the 3 mentioned .375 H&H, .458 Winchester are listed as approved in the "Maximum Approved Calibres". If the .416 Rigby falls under the "Nominal Maximum Range "of 6,322 metres according to the CFO power factors ,it can be used at our range.
I know they are greater but the Feds here have listed & lumped it in classes such as *.338 Lapua Magnum -6,322metres "NMR" & under , *.308 winch.4,359 Metres "NMR" & under , .223 Winch. 4,121metres "NMR" & under. etc.
Strangely a few of the obviously bigger calibres are listed as under the .308 Win. section ,like the .350 Remington Magnum.
Guess where the .458 Winchester is ? ---- it's under the .223 Remington section !
Go figure . :confused:
I'm just happy there's a place to go shoot !!
 
The ballistic capabilty was max. range for the tables. .458 Win. doesn't go very far. Bullets used for ballistic software runs were those most commonly used for that calibre.

Yes we can own AND shoot larger than 50 cal in Canada.
My 20 mm Lahti is a NON restricted rifle, desite being a semi auto with a 10 rnd mag that does NOT require being pinned to 5 (as it is impossible to disassemble the mag then for cleaning)
The only range approved short of the military range at Wainright is the Genossee range west of Leduc in Alberta, no clue about ranges in other provinces.

In the US calibers larger than 50 make them "destructive devices" which are highly regulated by BATF and require a tax stamp to own.
