Bassett Machine Mount

Finally took the time to drill-in my Desert Warrior cheek-rest.
So here it is. (sorry for the crappy paint job...did this in 30 min during a lunch break, just before the hunting season).

I just emailed Bassett today with some questions on the non-picatiny mount systems. Seems they offer a "high" and "low" mount. Though the difference is only a 1/4" between the two, I was wondering why manufacture two different height mounts? If I can get away with not using a cheek piece on my factory chu wood, so much the better.
And yeah, though I want one now more than ever (after seeing those groups) the exchange and added duty, GST, dollar crap make me hesitate. 'Specially at Xmas time.

Sniper, it looks like you left the stripper clip guide on with that mount. Am I seeing that right?

The original style mounts Bill makes are different in height for different scope objectives. The rings are on a angle so "taller" rings would put your scope up but to the right as well. Hence why he recommends medium rings I believe as they were made to use them.

As well none of the mounts need any modifications to the rifle to be used like many other mounts.

1) my Basset picatinny mount is quite high... allows to use the irons under it. So maybe the "low mount" dissables the use of the sights, but gives you a better cheekweld without the need of an added cheekriser ? you'll have to ask basset for that.

2) wrong, the stripper clip guide is removed... but i removed it a long time before i got the Basset mount, for another reason. So i'm not sure if the clip guide would fit. My initial impression is yes, 'cause the mount gives lots of clearance.

Good day Sir,

On your website you list 2 different types of "standard" scope mount
packages. One is the "High Mount" and the other is the "Low Mount".

Question 1) Why manufacture two different heights when theres only 1/4"
difference?

Question 2) Does the High Mount allow use of the original factory peep
sight?

Question 3) Do I have to remove the original sight to use the Low Mount?

I want to mount a 3-9x40 1" Bushnell scope on a standard Norinco M-14 with
the original military type wood stock. And I wasn't planning on using a
cheeck piece.

What is your opinion?

Regards, Rick

Hi Rick,

Manufacturing both heights was a customer-driven decision. Some like to use
their iron sights, and some don't. Yes, the High mount allows use of the
original factory peep sight - however, the diameter of the objective bell
could interfere with that - Your Bushnell scope mention shouldn't interfere.

No, you do not have to remove the iron sights to use the Low mount - but
they won't be usable with the Low mount. Bassett said to just crank it down
and you'll be fine - however, some scopes may have a larger ocular lens
which would interfere. Your Bushnell shouldn't interfere.

The height of the rings you choose will also be a major player in iron
sights, cheek weld and eye relief.

The Low mount if used with high rings, will place the scope directly over
the barrel. Some don't like the scope not being directly over the barrel -
you have to make the adjustment in your head but it is still parallel to the
barrel...just something to keep in mind.

Please let us know if you have any further questions. If you would like to
talk directly to Bassett, I can give you his number and how to reach him.

Now, with all that said...whats the "sweet" combo to go with so my ejecting cases don't wreck my scope? I would like to go with the low mount and *Medium* rings so I'm not having to hold my head up off the stock. As I said in the email, I didn't want to use a cheeck piece.
But I DEFINATELY don't want the scope damaged.
