597 or 10/22?

The funny thing I've noticed with 597s is that the more expensive ones don't seem to shoot well! I bought the cheapest one available and shoot the crappiest federal bulk pack ammo through it with amazing accuracy, while my Dad bought the TVP top-of-the-line 597 for 5 times the cost and we can't find any ammo that groups very well with it, inspite of the heavy barrel and target stock, etc.
Weird eh!?

I'm having that same problem with my TVP. I found one lot of Lapua super club that it shot extremely accurately. Everything else shot like complete crap :confused

597 !

Had a 10/22 ---> Sold it

Got a 597 ---> Keeping it

My copy of the 597 had the 10/22 beat in the accuracy dep't by quite a bit - evaluating many types of ammo. The 597 still has it's preferences and can't say that it shoots any just kind well. My 597 has a preference for CCI Mini Mags (36gr).

This is from my experience using (scoped) standard models. Modded triggers and extractors in both.

That said, Hot-Lips Hi-cap 10/22 mags worked better than the 30-rounders for the 597 do.

I've seen some 10/22 heavy barrels that shoot really great - however, can't say the same for 597 (in a HB).

So, in the grand scheme of things, both can be, or are awesome rifles. Still, a lot depends on what you're looking for and what you want to do with it.

I concur with some of the previous posters and FWIW I believe that if you are comparing base models 597 to 10/22, the Remington is the better rifle. At the target model level, the 10/22 seems to be the one. If you are purchasing with the intent to pimp it out, the 10/22 is the one you want, though hopefully the aftermarket will start to address the 597, as it is after all a Remington(lots get sold).
 
597+CCI Mini-Mags= small group good times.

I just picked up a 30 rd mag for my LSHB in .22 LR. I've fired the 10/22 but I would never give up my 597 for one.
 
I think 1022 vs 597 is pretty much weekly discussion. I say its 597 because I like mine and never liked 1022 whenever I had a chance to shoot them.

On the other hand - I have seen one target 1022 with hammered barrel and synthetic all-adjustable stock for 450$ and that one may be an ok rifle, providing trigger is fixed.

The 597 should have been the better rifle. However the Ruger magazine system really slays the one on the 597. Even with the "new" we've fixed it and got it right 597 mags, I've had 2 of the 4 I bought not work properly. I've never had any issues at all with the stock Ruger mags. Plus my 597 is extremely ammo sensitive. It either shoots the rare bullet and even then you need a specific lot. The right bullet shoots with amazing precision. The rest shoot groups in 1-2" at 20 yards indoors. :mad:

I have a target model with the stainless hammer forged barrel. Both my 597 and the 10/22 had crap triggers off the shelf.
 
597 all the way. the stock on the 597 is the best of the two, and the accuracy is better with the 597 out of the box over the 10/22. i think the 10/22 is way over rated.
 
i have the 597 SS and it shoots great accurate, reliable with 10 round not so reliable with the plastic 30 rounders over all great gun:)

i would reccomend it to anyone:)....
 
I have not had any issues with the 10 round mags for my 597 once they are worked in, but finding ammo that works is another matter...

Also the 30 rounders work best with 20-25 rounds in them max.. and by then my thumbs are sore anyway...
