Hey guys!

I am just wondering if I could get your help for a friend..
He has expressed interest in buying a shotgun. He is going to take his P.A.L test at the next possible date, but he would like to go with us when we go shoot skeets next week with a bunch of friends. He wants his own shotgun for this.

He told me that if I bought a shotgun that I would be able to keep it in my safe. and bring it out whenever he went along, until he got his P.A.L.

This being said, he has a $400 limit, and he is a fan of the pump-action.

I was wondering what would be the best shotgun out there for this price range. Lets say $400 before taxes, so it could be $399+tax.

By best I mean: reliability, recoil reduction, functionality, those sort of things.

Is an 870 a tried and true shotgun to purchase or is there something else worth looking at?

Thanks

in that price range you may want to look at a Mossberg 500... Can't say that its the best but its a great firearm that is usally under $400 before taxes..

I was able to get a mossberg 500 field/security combo deal.. it came with two barrels and a bunch of chokes for $350 IIRC last year.

Yeah 870 > than the MOSS anyday. In fit, finish, quality and durability.

I just bought myself a new Express as a Xmas present to myself and also as my first Firearms purchase since i got my RPAL. next on the list is some pistols after christmas.

But yeah. get the 870, you wont look back.

Id cast a vote for the Winchester Defender. dont know exactly how much they go for, but Im sure one can be found in that ballpark. Fit and finish nicer than the 870, find the ergonomics of it better too. Just my .02

Strangely my 870 jammed all the time and never happened once with my Maverick 88:eek:

maverick 88/mossberg 500 either one is good. The combo long barrel/ short barrel one are good. Only problem is the long barrel is only 24 inch! Have used the maverick 88 for years and it does work well. But its not in the browning a5/ remington 870/1100 class. Just a good gun to use in the rain and snow.

i got a mossberg 535 with thumbhole stock and camo for $395 new. shoots great, lightweight, and the fit and finish is better then the 870. (although both have poor fit and finish when compared to more expensive units) i'd suggest he go see which one fits him better

Just as strange as the guy with the Mav 88, whose action kept blowing open on the shot. Long thread on this forum a while back.

I vote for spend a few bucks more and go for the BPS:D
