Rimfire Choices!

Well, I have decided I need another .22 rimfire. I currently have a Lakefield 64B and an old S&W revolver I just picked up. After looking long and hard, I think I have narrowed my choice down to a Henry Lever action (just the regular model - $269) or a Remington 597 (again, just the basic model model). I have had 4 10/22's and just never really have got into them much. I will use the new gun for woodchuck hunting, as well as other rodents etc... around the farm, and plinking. I see SIR has the 597 with the scope for $199, but the barrel has no sights, which I would like. I like the looks of the Henry, but I like the option of 30 round mags for the 597. Your thoughts on the 2 guns? Is there something else that I may have overlooked?
 
I have a henry golden boy and it's action is very slick. It's nice to shoot and accurate but a little heavy. I get more people wanting to look at it than any of my other .22's, including my 597 and 10/22. I say go for the henry !
 
I don't know how was that possible narrowing down to two so much different choices. I say for hunting it has to be semi auto with at least 10-shot magazine. I personally prefer heavy profile barrel, even for hunting, in fact more so for hunting. That sort of eliminates both of your choices. 597 can be bought with heavier barrel, but it will be somewhere 300$. Ther reason I am personally against lever is because of sight disturbance when cycled, not good for hunting at all, in fact its worse than bolt rifle.
 
Lever is not bad for hunting, it's actually alot of fun. Sight disturbence - no more than a bolt or pump. You only have to pull the hammer back on the first shot. You don't need high capacity mags for hunting. Anyone who needs a semi and 10 rd clip for hunting is obviously a poor shot and has poor technique. He needs the semi because he can't cycle well and 10 shots cause he can't hit what he looks at !! I still say get the henry.

Well, I really like lever guns, and I only have a 30/30 right now. Winchester 9422's are out of my price range, so the Henry was the obvious choice. I also like 30 round mags, and as I said before, I am not a big fan of the 10/22 (good gun, but I just can't warm up to it), so the 597 seems to be the only other semi auto that has much aftermarket support.
 
id get the henry, its slick. Im hoping to get one myself in '09.

I had a friend had a lever 22, i dont remeber the make, but it was a rerpro of a winchester centerfire. The things tube musta held well over 20 rnds and the barrel was very heavy. Wasnt much for lugging around the woods, but probly one of the most accuate and fun to shoot rimfires ive ever seen.

Disagree. Sometimes quails come in cluster of 15-20 birds. Squirrel never stops for more than half a second - and it is really small target. Good shot or not, you need repeater with hi-cap magazine.
 
I agree, it should be a repeater bolt. A person tends to make the shots count and why buy new....some of the older stuff is as good or better than the new stuff. All my varmint guns are pre 1960 and some 1930s bolts and semis. They are accurate to a "tee"...they cycle great and are easily fixed ( if they ever need to be) Thousands of shells thru my Lakefield mark II and never a gun caused FTF or FTE. Though some of the ammo has much to be desired in thier quality control.

Way to generalize.... :rolleyes:

Anyways, don't let the absence of irons on the 597 w/ scope bother you, the stock irons on the 597 are garbage anyways, which is why I went with a 4x30 scope and haven't looked back.

Exactly...you never know when you'll encounter multiple "targets of opportunity"...:p
 
I bought a brand new Henry .17HMR Varmint Express. The trigger has gotta be the worst on the market....terrible. The gun had very serious issues feeding, rounds would jam in the tube and wouldn't lift into the chamber.
I returned the gun after 2 weeks, contacted the president of Henry and told him of my disappointment.
I would never buy Henry again!
