cooey model 60 stock refinish problem

can't seem to get min wax stain to color wood properly.End up with uneven blotchy and dirty looking stain job any advise woul be appreciatwd

Have you tried using a pre stain wood sealer. It's supposed to make wood take the stain more evenly. Should be available at Home Depot etc. Just a thought.

Are you sure you have removed all the old finish? If not, it'll turn out blotchy every time....

this is the second time I've sanded down stock completly and I am sure all old finish is gone.

Maybe try using a chemical stripper in addition to sanding. Thats what I did on my 60 and it came out really nice.

It's a birch stock,and birch doesn't take stain evenly.Our dyed M-64 stock came out looking like surgi finish (burned bands) used on maple rifle stocks . While I never have never stained or dyed birch furniture,the common way to get an even finish is a wash of shellac.

You can also give it a good rub down with tea as strong as you can make it, then box it up tight with a bowl of ammonia for a couple weeks. The Tannic Acid interacts with the ammonia and gives a nice coloration to the wood. a real "old fashioned" way of doing it.....

When I got dads old cooey 60 I stripped the stock with furniture stripper, gave it a light sand with 220grit then two coats of boiled linseed.turned out be utiful!

use a prestain, and all old finish must be removed
