Private sale

All you need to do is have both parties phone ready, call the CFC, you talk with the person, tell info on what you are doing,.. selling/transferring a non-restricted. Then the buyer talks with the person gives info,.. and firearm has changed registration you can cut up your old reg certificate if you wish.

The buyer will get a new certificate for your old rifle in the mail,.. it does not have to go with the rifle.

Well I was looking at buying one and wondered if I could buy it from them and go shooting right after if I had their old certificate. That way I wouldn't have to wait until I got the new one in the mail to go shooting.

You could go shooting with/without his old certificate its no matter of importance. AS LONG as you have called the CFC and notified them of the change of ownership, they might/should also give you the number of the card for you in the mail in case you need it. Nonetheless, if you have that rifle and the RCMP run the serial,.. it will show that it was legally transferred to you and you are awaiting registration card in the mail.

I have done this many times and have never had a problem(knock on wood :) )

I went to the CFC site and dug this up for you

It is generally simple to transfer and register a firearm to a new owner by telephone. Call 1-800-731-4000 and select the transfer option from the menu of services. Please have the following information ready:

* full name, address and firearms licence number;
* the name, address and firearms licence number of the new owner; and
* the registration certificate number and firearms identification number of the firearm, as indicated on the registration certificate.

The CFP transfer agent will guide callers through the process.

The new owner can take physical possession of the firearm as soon as the CFP transfer agent provides them with their new registration certificate number. The registration certificate will then be mailed to the new owner within a few weeks
