Got the "Last" of marstar's norinco's M14's...who do i send it to on the west coast?

Hi All!

I'm Jeff, I'm pretty new here!

For christmas, I asked my family for a Norinco M14S, 2 days later It was "out of stock" so I went ahead and bought myself a brand spanking new Rem700 VSF .308 left-handed....

To my surprise....They got me one, apparently "the last one in stock", so I've been told...
I'm still getting into shooting, I got my license in february and have been loving it since, and I'm still learning as I go...

So, my question for everybody is, who do I send my (probably moldy) New Norinco to in the West-Coast (Victoria) to get it checked/tuned up etc so it's in excellent firing condition etc?

I don't trust myself enough to do the work on it myself yet, and would rather someone who's skilled in them use their expert ability!

Thank you kindly, it's appreciated, with luck I'll throw up some pics next week of my newly unboxed M14s :)

-Jeff

Having had a few of the Nork M14S, I would give you the following advice: degrease it and shoot it. It does not need to get checked out or tuned up to shoot reliably.

Welcome to another Victorian - as stated above, clean er up and try er out before throwing money at someone to fix something that may not need fixing.

unfortunately Jeff, I am not aware of any shops/gunsmiths in B.C. that are dealing with the norcs.
I get p.m's from fellow b.c. m14s owners all the time wanting me to work on thier guns. Another unfortunate thing is that i am not a liscenced gunsmith, so I can't offer my services in that manner.

However, here in the vancouver area (langley) I host the west coast m14 support group..... big fancy name for our m14 clinics :D
you are more than welcome to join us for a future event and share the knowledge. I will be hosting another clinic in February, date to be announced in several weeks. Here , we will demystify the m14s, and "if it needs it" we can tune and tweak your rifle on the spot. There are a few guys from the Island that attend my events regularly and I have accomodations for those from out of town, in order to make attending the clinic a lil easier.

DAR701 brings up a good point though.
Too many guys get the impression, from all the internet chatter, that these rifles "need" to be worked on before they are reliable...... simply not the case.
Most are good shooters right out of the box and with some minor tweaking cn shoot very well indeed.

Welcome to the M14S club..... yer gonna love yer new rifle

Hi,

Just got my M-14 before Xmas.
Vic Fish & Game is shut down until the snow melts.
Where do you plan to shoot your new toy?

x3 on the try it out. If you absolutely must get it in to a gun smith, Pullens is probably the best shop on the lower island. John is a very good gunsmith and they won't cheat you. The downside is that I can't get out of their store without buying something, so either come without cash, or come with lots of it:p

not to knock the guy HWally recommends, never dealt with him. However, I have now had to repair and replace parts on a good 1/2 dozen or more local gun nut's m14s rifles due to a qualified liscenced gunsmith, not knowing what he's doing when it comes to these particular firearms ..... I will not name them...... and screwing up these guys rifles.

If you are reasonably close to the vancouver area...... save your cash and spend it on a trip to one of my clinics. You will leave with peice of mind, and a rifle that has been given the once over for FREE. I have all the tools required, specifically dedicated for the m14 series rifles, to address any issue the rifle may have. Great way to network with other m14 owners as well.

Graphite if you can't get to .45ACP's clinic...then wait, and attend one of "Hungry"'s seminars he next time he flies west. I was lucky, he told me my rifle was so tight out of the box that "I should buy 3 lottery tickets...or my #### would fall off."
Check out the stickies at the top of the "main battle rifle" page.

Heck, if you truely got the last one...hang onto it for a year then stick it in the EE for a gazillion bucks.

Hey guys, thanks kindly for the quick replies!

Dar, I will give that a shot, thanks! :) Just like to make sure that it's running at 100%, not just getting by at 75%, but we'll see how it fires!

pontcanna, thanks, glad to know there's more people from vic on these boards.

lmar, I go to Vic F&G frequently, usually up at the pistol range though! Once it opens back up (and once I find some optics for my Rem700 [thinking Bushnell 4200]) I'm gonna go up there and take er' for a spin! :D

45acpking, Rick65Cat, I think I'll try to make it out for february aslong as it's on a weekend, full time 9-5 + ferry ride usually means showing up later in the evening, but it'd be nice to have guys who have the knowledge, experience and the tools to have a look at her and give me the heads up on how healthy she is!

Rick65Cat,

Here's hoping I can make it out to 45acp's, if not maybe I can swing to one of the other seminars, its nice to get info from those with experience! Here's hoping mine's tight out of the box (but it's the 'last of the last' so it may be dogmeat)

Lastly, why would I sell it? ;) I'd Ideally make it a Norinco/USGI hybrid with a heavy profile barrel and a Troy MCS...

This is what I'm going for:

old meets new, great rifle + great stock, throw on an EOtech and we're set for 3 gun matches! :D

Thanks guys, all your input is appreciated!

One thing you could do is buy the op rod spring guide from marstar and get a us op rod spring. Cheap way to make the gun work better.

Just because you may have got the last one from Marstar, doesn't mean its the last one made. All these guns are made from a collection of parts, not assembly line fitted. Its surely not dogmeat...
And why go to town with all the expensive gobbledy gook when the inexpensive stock rifle works fine and shoots fine. You got your Rem 700 for the lonnng shots.
All I'm doing with mine is replacing the op-rod spring guide and putting on a Bassett Machine scope mount.

John Pullen is an excellent gunsmith, with considerable experience in military firearms. Unfortunately, John does NOT have much in the way of parts for the 14s.
What exactly do you need done?

Just the basics to start, checking headspace, indexing the barrel, maybe installing a USN brake. :)

I like where your head's at!

My theory though is that I'll slowly build it up (USGI bolt, spring/oprod, brake) then slowly start going looney-tunes on it (heavy barrel, new gas system, troy stock)....Ive prettymuch always wanted a rifle that was reliable, semi auto and had some good length in rails [not that I'm going to attach all sorts of crap to it], it's just like old meets new...

probably the same deal why I like 69 camaros with modern suspension and drivelines ;)

haha

Jeff: Congrats on scoring an M14! By any measure it's a great gun. There's a lot of stuff here on this site to help you out with cleaning/reassembly your gun.
Check this out: http://surplusrifle.com/m14m1a/rifledisassembly/index.asp (copy and paste) to see good detailed info. You can also get a PDF manual on the net somewhere, sorry but I forgot. Then shoot some rounds and send Hungry 5 pieces of brass, he'll measure the headspace for you. Then go to a clinic when you can! Good luck !

I think the Norcs are just perfect out of box. The only things I've ever changed on mine was to replace the short 5 rounder to a better looking 5/20 and to swap that dorky "nutered" flash hider with one with a bayo lug.

my wife just got me a m14, GOD BLESS HER...........question is this, i live in Ontario, are there any workshops, dealers, etc. set up in Ontario? I'm looking for a aftermarket stock, scope mount, etc.

cheers!
