Why is it that 303 Mk 7 Ball ammo was issued in 48 round boxes in WW2 when all the rifles and light MGs had 10, 20 or 30 round mags? I can't, for the life of me, figure out why they would do that.
Why is it that 303 Mk 7 Ball ammo was issued in 48 round boxes ...
We still get 9mm IVI ball in 64 round boxes, because the Sten and Sterling both had 32 round mags IIRC.

Not suprising considering this is a rimmed round. Lots easier to stach .30-06 ontop of one another because the cases are much straighter and no rims to worry about.
Woodchopper is right. Its about trying to get lots of ammo into a small case.
Multiples of dozens (or fractions of a gross, if you prefer). Most things in commercial trade came in dozens, if the unit of issue wasn't:- ea.
