Hey everyone, I just picked up a Remington 700 CDL Boone and Crocket in 7mm-08 and I would like to lighten it up a bit. I scoped it with a Vortex 2.5-10X50, aluminum weaver bases and rings, currently it weighs 9.1 pounds. The scope is only temporary and it weighs over 19 ounces, I plan to re-scope it with a Vortex 3-9X40 that weighs 14 ounces, so that will save 5 ounces, and I would also change the bases and rings if there are significantly lighter options out there. I am also wondering about the rifle itself, it wears a laminated stock that I like but I imagine alot of weight comes from that. Now I would like to keep the stock on the rifle, but is there any way to lighten it up a bit? I see Boyds sells a laminated stock with wood removed from the barrel channel area and possibly from the butt stock under the recoil pad to lighten it up a bit. Is this possible with a factory stock?

Any suggestions for bases/rings and possible stock modifications would be appreciated!

:)

Wood stock has to go to really see a differance in weight,Robertson has some very nice 18 to 20oz models for your gun, couple of friends have them very nice stocks, you will save pounds instead of ounces, and as Charlie said leupold makes some light scopes

Get yourself the Leupould 3-9X33 ultralight at 9.5oz, or the 2-7X28 ultralight at 8.2oz; then buy a pair of those Talley one piece ring/base aluminum mounts. If it's still too heavy, then think about hogging out the stock.

Easiest way to trim weight there is with a lighter scope and Talley mounts. More expensive savings would be a lightweight stock.

The B&C is a nice rig, but it wouldn't be my first choice to try and make a lightweight rig out of. I'd leave it as is, and if you want a lighter rig, start with something with a 22" barrel and a cheap stock...

Talley Rings
Leupold FXIII 6x42
GreTan Pin and shroud.

personally I wouldn't have bought a LSS Mtn rifle if I wanted a light factory 700 in 7-08.

Like most people have already said loose the stock..... go with a Edge stock talley ultra light rings order them directly from the factory they have great service there and I would put a Leupold VX-2 3-9x33 ultra light or a VX-3 2.5-8x36 if you want better optics than a vx-2 its only 2 oz heavier than the VX-2 3-9x33 ultra light model. But really if I where you I would sell the gun you have and buy a ultra light rifle it will be cheaper than all those mods. IE. Kimber 84M Montana or even a sako finlight, Weatherby MarK V Ultra light or even a Remington 700 TI or a Rem Model 7 . Those are light weight rifles.

I'd dump the rather huge [x50mm] scope for a much smaller/lighter Leupold VXII 2x7.
