help me pick a powder and primer

I'm trying a new load in my .308 LTR.

I've primarily been firing 168 hornadys with RL-15 and have had some decent results though I think it can be a lot better so I bought some Lapua 168 moly match bullets and also got some brand new Lapua brass.

I'm stuck between varget and Bl-c(2)

I've tried Blc2 before and it performed very well, though i've heard of some of you getting good results with varget as well.

Plus are there any specific primers any of you target shooters favour?

I've been primarily using CCI large rifle primers and at times the benchrest ones.

Since i've put in some coin to these materials I don't want to spend as much time experimenting. so starting out on the best footing here will save me time and money.

Lapua bullets and brass are some of the finest in the world,that doesn't mean you will get the desired results you're looking for.
If your rifle doesn't like them then it's money wasted. I found that my 7.62x51 AIA favors Nosler Partition's, I'm not going to be punching a lot of paper with those. I also get very good results with the selection of Speer and Hornady hunting bullets as well. If your rifle doesn't like the 168 then try 165 or 150's,the only way to know it to shoot a lot.....
 
When shooting hunter class a few years back the guys winning where useing 168gr Sierra's MK
Benchrest primers, CCI & Fed Gold Match toss up between IMR4064,4895 & H 4895.light loads 39 to 43gr
now days most fellows seem to like Varget, I have never seen Varget shoot any smaller groups today than a few years ago, but seems to work very good at stout loads for 900 meters, with 155gr bullets.

no question here...
I am reloading for the 308 since nearly 20 years and I used most of the commercial powders available.
IMHO Varget is the best powder for 308 hands down...
 
"...don't want to spend as much time experimenting..." There's no way around working up a load. The same bullet weight means they'll be close to the load you're using now. Mind you, if you change powders or any one component, you have to work up the load for your rifle again. Stick to one primer.
IMR4064 is another good .308 powder.
 
I have been using Varget since it hit the market in Canada and only use Federal 210 Match primers. Most of my shooting is with 155 gr bullets but I have used 168's for 300m ISU matches. The old standby load for 300m and 168's is 39 gr of IMR 3031. Not a speed demon load but if your only shooting 300m who cares?
 
My best 700 meter 308 load uses a military equivalent BL (C)2 powder (43.6 gr, I think), 168 gr HP (Hornady or Sierra, with a slight accuracy nod to the Hornady in this rifle), and whatever LR rifle primer I have to hand (usually Win, as I bought a LOT during the last "shortage"). I play with other bullets and powders just to see how they do, but this is the load I KNOW will hit as far as I can shoot (this gun anyway). Plus, I can whip it off the progressive in large amounts, always a plus. - dan
 
BL-C(2) and winchester large rifle primers

I have found cci primers to vary I would get the odd flyer but since switching to winchester large rifle primers I now get 0 flyers. Federal large rifle and mag primers also seem to be very good.

Varget is to inconsistant it meters horrable for me and if you dont have enough to last you for a long time from the same lot number you will be re-doing your load every time you buy a pound of powder.
