Tactical shotguns

' CF Inventory ' used the Rem 870, I have had a total of three 870's in one configuration or another, side saddle, ghost rings, extended mags, assorted barrel lengths but a buddy has a Mossy 'entry gun' 14 inch barrel ( class 3 firearm in some US states....dont ask me why ) and a couple of mossy 590's I fell in love with them right off the bat........:)

I don't really know a whole lot about shotguns, but I want to get myself a tactical shotgun. I was looking at a Mossberg 500 tactical and I think its a pretty rad gun. What's your opinion of this shotgun? Are there other better choices for a tactical shotgun for about $600 or less?

I will also look at the Fabarms - slightly more expensive but it is in the right configuration rigt out of the box.

All arguements aside, I'm am a die hard 870 guy. HOWEVER... I have yet to hear of anyone wearing out a Mossberg yet. They do feel a bit cheap to me, but I will also answer that so does my express compared to my 870P.

What you NEED to do is go to the gun shop and physically handle both guns. Whichever feels right to YOU is the one you buy. The Mossy might feel cheap but enough enforcement agency's around the world probably have something to say about that. The real world fact is that altho both have serious downfalls against them, they both always go bang when required. Also note that the safety placement, being a preference only issue is a valid concern to look at. Gather as much info from everyone here, lol there's a lot of it. but don't write either off untill you handle it. And for what it is worth, $90 is not alot of money to save if it lasts a lifetime(As the all probably will)

My FABARM, on the other hand is the most baddass piece of equiptment going. Unfortunatly I traded it to a roofer to do my roof...priorities.

Try then all at one time or another then you will know first hand, there are many on the EE,, I think I'll take my own advice,,,, just for the record!!!!!

alloys are usually lighter and stronger and the mossy is an aluminum alloy. also if thats your fight about safety then id hate to say thats a weak punch there. theyve been used by the military since the 70s, there service history is better than remingtons

Since when is " Aluminum Alloy" stronger than Steel?

Accept no substitutes

If the S were ever to really HTF this - over and above any rifle, handgun or other shotgun - is what would be with me.

Get an 870 and slowly build it up as you like it. This one was built by up from a stock 870 Police by Tactical Ordnance (what can I say about Casey other than he is a master). It has:

- Vang Comp Systems (VCS) modified barrel with ports
- VCS Mag extension
- VCS Mag follower
- VCS big saftey
- Mesa Rail
- Scattergun/Trijicon tritium sights
- Mesa shotshell holder
- Mesa recoil stock with Enidine buffer
- Mesa hook loops
- Surefire 618FGA Light
- BFG sling

Completely reparkerized and finished in grey teflon.

It consistently puts 1 ounce slugs into 6" at 100 meters.

I sold a Benelli M4 last year and I didn't even blink when I packed it up and shipped it off. You will never see this piece in the EE.

mossy 590 and 870 Police

I have owned an 870 Police put on all Wilson stuff ie. follower and spring, ghost rings, jumbo head safety etc. also put on side saddle, slings and heat shield. This was about 10 years ago cost me over 1100 when all was said and done. Sold it 3 years ago and now own a Mossberg 590 with speedfeed stock heat shield and 9 round capacity for $475.00. Gobles has the same one right now on for $429.00.
For what I use it for the Mossberg is all I need. Sure the reciever is an alloy but lockup is still steel to steel. This was my experience any way I hope it helps you out.:shotgun:

get an 870 or a mossberg 590A1
I would recommend the 870.
I have owned winchester/ithaca/mossberg/remington/and fabarm.
all great except the mossberg 500. (dumped shells and safety would stick)
I have 4 or 5 870's at a given time for good reasons.

you can get parts for 870's everywhere. they are very very reliable and adaptable.

fabarms are nice, but imho not heavy duty enough to trust with your life.

590A1's are great but not as adaptable as 870's (configuration)

Ithaca's rock, bottom eject and slam fire. good luck finding parts and accessories.

beretta's and the rest are nice but the barrel costs as much as any of the aforementioned. spend the money on ammo and practice practice practice.

my .02cents

870 Home Defense model with 2 shot mag ext, tactical for cheap. Other than that little cap on the bottom of the grip falling off and only shooting 30shells out of it she is lovely.

If you are looking for tacticool you would be crazy to not go 870.

In my experience (a handful of each brand), comparable Mossbergs and Remingtons are too similar to call in terms of which is "better" but one trend I have noticed is that when they get REALLY DIRTY (I mean drop the damn thing in the mud and the sand and then try to cycle and shoot it with crap all over it, REALLY NASTY DIRTY) the Mossbergs seem to keep working after the Remingtons have locked up.

After cycling the action, you'll find that the 500 almost feels like a toy, it feels like it would be so easy to break.

After cycling the action, the 870 feels almost like a toy compare to a Win 1200/1300 Defender.

I like them all. I'll own them all.

I'm a fan of the 870's in general, but I have to say you should all look at Pier's (CGN member) 590A1.

It is an all steel, parkerized beast with a thick barrel. A beautiful sight to behold. I don't know who he ordered it from, but playing with it in a sandpit made me think twice and then twice again about the mossbergs. They can be every bit as nice as the 870's. This things is BADASS!

My two cents is that the only thing i really like about the Mossy is the loading gate being up so you can't pinch your finger when reloading.

As for the safety location, I prefer the mossy tang safety with conventional stocks, but the Remy trigger group location with pistol grip stocks.
