Do any of the Canadian provinces issue concealed carry licenses to civilians and if so, what are the requirements and limitations of said license? I understand that Quebec has the most draconian gun laws. Which province has the most liberal (if you can excuse me for using that term?)

Can you hunt with a handgun anywhere in Canada? How about just carrying a "trail gun" when you're camping, hiking or fishing?

There is a provision in the Firearms Act for the provincial firearms officer to issue an Authorization to Carry for the protection of life.
It is common knowlege that anyone applying is automatically refused.
 
Our gun laws are technically the same across the country, as the governing legislation is issued by the federal government. However, administration is done on a province by province basis, and provinces have the option of appointing their own Chief Firearms Officers, or letting the federal gov't handle it. Ontario and Quebec both have their "own" CFOs but the rest are federal public servants, all with considerable power given by a poorly constructed and highly unpopular act...The end result is the act is applied unevenly across the country with variations in everything from transfer times to conditions on the ATT (the ATT is an Authorization to Transport; a piece of paper that says when, where, and how you can transport your restricted (pistols, AR variants, anything with bbl under 18") firearms).

Don't even try to make sense of it...
 
Folks from the States must just shake their heads when they hear about our gun rules, I hope it helps point out to them how things can/will get for them in their own country if they don't continue to fight for their rights. It may also help to point out to them why there is a small, but growing interest in Western Canada separation, on this site and elsewhere. Presumably a sep. Western Can. would have laws that would help protect citizens and concentrate on criminals, to carry this further, we certainly would have every right to protect our selves with any method we see fit! Sorry if I ramble from spot to spot, but this thread really shows how dumb and controlling governments can get!!
 
Hello, American friend. Canadians are not good at starting public debate about their status quo of rights. I think it's one of the few s**tty things about Canada. (On this forum, we're all just preaching to the choir.)

I would love to see a rational, factual documentary about how inferior Canadian attitudes and laws are when it comes to rights of private property and protection of life, especially contrasted with our close historical and cultural siblings in the USA.

Strangely, Canadians do have a few weird "freedoms" that Americans don't have when it comes to firearms. Off the top of my head... possessing short barreled shotguns (12", 8", or less) is perfectly legal in Canada and I know some US states prohibit that type of posession. And we can buy some interesting and really cheap Chinese-made guns. But those are small consolations when you can't even plink with a .22 LR handgun on a farm or when camping. And don't even think about defending yourself with a firearm (our storage and carry laws effectively prohibit it).
 
There are thousands of Canadians who have the Canadian equivalent of a Concealed Carry permit. Most are wealthy members of the chatering class in Canada. One who is not is General (RET) Mckensie, just appointed to the Canadian senate.

Can you show me some proof of this? We are interested in knowing exactly how many Canadians have these permits.
 
In my youth there was very little difference between Canadian and American gun laws. I regularly took my Winchester 22 rifle with me for my summer holidays and no one thought a thing about it. I gather that I would now be sentenced as a youthful offender with smuggling. Regards, Richard:)
 
How do we find out how many CCW's there are canada wide, and by province?

what about wilderness carry, anyone fork over the $35 to get your trappers license and get a wilderness carry certificate?

I'm not sure about hunting with a handgun, but trappers could get permission to carry while they are out on the trails or in camp. The reason was personal protection because it was easier to bring into play at night than a rifle or shotgun. As I said it was possible, but talking with several trappers, there was a lot of red tape involved before they were allowed to carry.

But every time someone tries to find out they run into the wall of silence, I've heard anecdotal stories about a few. Including a former lady PM.
 
prproulx, you are correct. Canadians/Canadiens are so exposed to the USA and its Constitutional Rights that they assume American rights also apply to Canadians/Canadiens. We have a "Bill of Rights" and you have a "Charter of Rights" and these two laws do not contain the same items. In other words, there is no "Second Amendment" in Canada. Regards, Richard:(

Fitting a shoulder stock to a pistol is a complete non-issue here, no $200 BATFE tax required. Better yet, we can order handguns through the mail and have them delivered to our door. (Okay, I had to pick mine up at the local Post Office but I have to do that with everything else I order.)
