Howdy.
I usually go coyote hunting with about 6 calls. I generally only get to use one for each stop in the hunt. By then, they are frozen stiff inside from the condensation in my breath. Anyone have innovative solutions for keeping them from freezing?

Thanks.

YKD

I find cheap calls freeze, Ive been out in -25 with the johnny Stewart Crit'r Distress and dog howler and never had any issues.

Yup ! Open reed is the way to go. More volume more versatility easy to use. Closed reeds go south if you blow to hard and they just plain freeze up. I have closed reed calls made by the most respected call makers there is and they still freeze up. Great if you live in Texas. Even kept inside your coat they freeze when you start blowing on them.
Open reed calls go from a rabbit distress to howl or a canine distress without leaving your mouth. Pitch is controled by lip position.

I want some open reeds too, but for now I have to use my Johnny Stewat and other closed reed calls. I use wool flip-top mits, and when I'm done calling, I put it inside my mitt. That seems to work if I have to use it again to get a coyote moving. Then, when I drive to my next set, I lay it on the heater vents and make sure to flick out any moisture. Also, I sometimes put a couple of those little handwarmer pouches in my pocket, and put my calls in there with them. You can also put the pouch in you hand when holding the call, helping to keep the call and you hand warm. I've thought about using a little flask of moonshine as antifreeze, but try explaining that to the cops!

Pretty sure he's hunting in Alberta, thus,no electronic calls.Sucks! But, I saw the price on the FoxPro's, and I think I'll stick with hand calls!

BT! That ought to work since you don't use your breath. How are they motion wise?

The Howler pack is open reeds , and includes a Howler (The Best sounding on the market) and a Female tube and includes the pup tube. You can do all Barking, whining, distress pup , distress rabbit what ever you want with this pack.

The Dog Duster series come in the Rabbit distress , Bird distress, and a loud mouse squeek and they are a push type call that is small enough with the volume to work the calls close to your body or even in your pocket for that matter. As a demo'er of this product I find a push/pull on the rubber housing can work the call great and your breath never touches the calls reeds with very little movement in use.

QB also has a Grey push type mouse squeeker for the low sound of bring the animal in a little closer.

Something to keep in mined is that a call is only as good as the one using it. Practice makes for better sounding calls..

Hope that helps

Hey Adrian I agree with you on the practice. What ever you do don't let Rick Cronk here that statement about the best sounding howler:D:D.

Seeing as this thread has picked up some interest again I thought I'd show some differences between the two types of calls. First are the closed reeds which are very popular in the south where it's warm. All the calls here whether the 40yr old Olt, the $85 Sly Dog (no I absolutely did not pay that, but it's what he sells them for) the Richard Grantham or the Ron Welch they and all closed reed calls have something in common and that is that shiny little tin thing you see there among them and that is a JC Products reed. Yes they all use it. There are now a couple of different thickness available as well as a double reed.

Below are some open reed calls. The horn is a howler but the others will howl too if they are single reed. Unless you buy premade voices which are now showing up due to demand these calls are each an individual. Most call makers shape their own tone boards. As Adrian says there are lots of production open reed call on the market to choose from as well. The reed is right inside your mouth so stays pliable. Lip position and or pressure change the tone and pitch of these calls making them extremely versatile. Rabbit distress to howl to pup distress without leaving your mouth.

Just to tease one of the members here this is what an open reed custom rosewood call looks like prior to being drilled and shaped:D

Yet another call is the diaphragm. I use a Quakerboy turkey call to make excellent sounding howls and they also make pup distress sounds so real it makes your hair stand on end blowing one;). They need your cupped hands or a megaphone like a cow horn etc to amplify the sound.
Have fun :D:D

I'll tell you what ! you can not compete with your custom calls my friend They are some of the best I have ever seen. My comment is only directed to the Howl of the call comp at the Harrisburg PA calling hall. We can not keep this call in this show it sells out every year ;) so for a manufactured call it does sound good....
