can someone explain optics magnification to me please

Hey going to be buying my first rifle ever. and i want to buy a really nice scope for it.

The range of the magnification for it is kinda confusing me.

I was wonder if someone knew a easy way to explain this to me please.

I'm sure it's easy, just unsure is all.

Incase it's important it's for a savage 10fp im going to use it for target "sniping"

First numbers are magnification and the number after the x is objective lens size.

A 3-9x44 would have a magnification range from 3 to 9 power with and objective lens size of 44mm.

For a target rifle, I'd likely be looking at something with a highest magnification in the 14 to 16 power range

okay i get it now, thanks alot
 
do a search awhile back i saw a post that went in depth about magnification, eye relief, and field of view very good knowledge to have before buying a scope
