Why wont the op rod come out?? I tried for half a hour and the damn thing will not come out. I followed the instructions to the letter and it still refuses to budge. This rifle seems like it does not want to be degreased but left well enuff alone as a safe queen:rolleyes:

any ideas??

well....mine came out very easily the first time. I just removed the spring and the spring guide, pulled the op rod back to reach the notch in the slide groove and then gently pull outward. It came out easily and went back just as easily.

don't feel bad.....I've lost track of how many m14s rifles I've stripped down.... and even my own rifle's oprod gives me grief sometimes. Often i struggle for 10 minutes..... put it down and give a good look of disgust :D only to try again later and it pops right out.
try turning the action upside down, pull the oprod to align with the removal recess in the receiver, push down and away on the oprod handle, with a little wiggling she should pop free.

THX guys I got it. I dumped all the solvent from my parts tank, cleaned everything up,then went back to it, turned it side ways and about 5 minutes later the damn thing popped out but it took a fair amount of force...now I have to set every thing back up again and continue cleaning...

Oleg...... if yer oprod comes out while firing........ you need a new oprod my friend.
I do have a new take off norc oprod in the EE if you need a replacement.... they ain't easy to find as spares ;)

Check your op rod guide - if you are lucky you have a tight one not requiring peening. This makes op rod removal tough.
Remove the split pin ,tap the bottom of the guide slightly , counter clockwise {facing the front sight} . This should relieve tightness enough that the op rod just lifts out.

It's tricky, you can click my link and watch me take it out in my video. If I remember it requires a bit of tinkering with before it comes out.

Stripping and reasssmebling can be a challenge. I removed my bolt for cleaning then tried like a mother F*&ker for 30 minutes to get it back in, I looked away to say something to my son and the damn thing slid right in and I have no idea how I did it. Its all good now.

Getting the bolt into the receiver is all about tilting the bolt the right way and sliding in while making it straight. It is almost like hinging it in from about a 45deg angle.

There is no way to easily explain it in words without pics but if you pay close attention visually to the inside of the receiver while you attempt to put the bolt in, you'll see the notches and obstacles in order to get the bolt into place.

Getting the oprod in/out can be tough. TIGHT is good. Just make sure that the tab is properly in the cutout notch while you gently put it in or out.

Funny my op rod came out without any effort at all....the bolt was another matter. I read and read read the instructions, could see what I was supposed to do but after going cross eyed I apparently made it work.

Okay, for those who attended my clinic:

1) Center the rear/receiver tang on you chest or belly button right NOW! Barrel pointing AWAY from you.

2) Left hand cradles the barreled action/receiver, support by the barrel or whatever works!

3) Grab the bolt LUG/roller on the right side (starboard for you Navy types)

4) Lift up by the bolt lug/roller and AWAY from you at an ACUTE (under 90 degrees, remember yer grade 9 Math ?), I ballparked about 2 o'clock or 1430 hrs give or take a tweak. While rotating upwards and outwards, give the bolt lug a quarter twist to the left, I think. Try the same quarter rotation to the right if the left does not work. This quarter turn allows the rear of the firing pin tang to clear the receiver bridge (go and have a look right now). This is the hardest part to explain over the internet and that's why you MUST learn this when you come to my clinic. It can ONLY be shown, brutally hard to explain over the Internet. :( I just do it so quickly that I cannot even remember which way to carry out that final quarter turn.

5) Don't disassemble the bolt !! I don't give a shzt how intelligent or mechanically inclined you are! Don't bother. Just give it a blast of aerosol brake cleaner then blow dry it, or compressed air, barring that treatment, just wave the bolt around and air dry it!! If you insist on pulling it apart because you are curious, then you deserve the shztstorm you get when you lose the ejector spring and ejector on the shag  carpet or shop floor. I get dozens of PM's begging me to re-assemble their bolts, then I get PM's asking me for spare bolt parts since the Norc M14 parts are now lost under the workshop bench. :( I cannot help but say, "NOW, your #### WILL fall off!"

Hope this helps.....

I was going to add...

Another way to actually get the bolt in and see what you are doing if you aren't used to it, is to hold your receiver with the left hand as Hungry said, but bring it just about your eye level and look underneath.

You'll see the what Hungry means about getting the firing pin tang into the proper slot over the receiver bridge. Then you should be able to easily get the bolt in and also get a feel for the angles the bolt must enter by.

If you do defy Hungry's orders of not disassembling the bolt, then do it into a big Ziploc freezer bag or inside a bucket of water.

The thing is that if you can't get it back together, you'll STILL be sending Hungry a PM begging him to put it back together for you....and then he might laugh, but you'll at least have all your parts :p

The simple way, don't worry, be happy and listen to Hungry.
