I examined a '94 38-55 which I think is in very good shape but I do not really know those ratings. 26" round bbl, full length mag tube. Bore is shiny and rifling looks excellent to me. DOM 1909. It was in a family for 3 generations and is still perfectly functional.

Bluing is gone from large patches on bbl, mainly sides towards muzzle. Little blue on receiver but it's more gray than silver. blue remains on bbl around the rear site and receiver. Mag tube still mostly blued, some blue on lever. ALL screw slots perfect. Appears to be original sights, think front one may have been filed to sharpen it. Some marks on wood, seems very minor to me for 100 yr old gun. Only thing I can see that is not original is a very small screw drilled down thru the front sight to set it, small and straight. Can you help me with a fair value range without pictures?
Thanks!

Estimating the wear based on the lack of original blue left on the metal, I'd say about $500 to $600. The front sights of that era did have a small screw, which may have been replaced in your case with a non-standard screw.

HOWDY; I would not wish to disagree with someone who goes by Win 38-55 but gun show guys ASK bit more 800 to 1000 ,they also carry the same gun around for months ??

There are becoming less and less of these old guns. Many disappear to the USA as buyers come and buy cheap ones worth money (retaining colour seems the high demand) and away they go. We have to try to retain some of these guns in Canada as we too often go by USA prices not Canadian demand.

No wonder many(collectible)guns do not change hands in Canada. I do wish we had a sense of just what is left up here, that originated here, of any value. I would never sell any of my guns at such a formentioned price. I would rather give to a museum ( most of mine are in the 100 year old bracket) They do retain a high value as thier numbers decrease. High end collectors have a low view of non- colour guns below 80% retention. Most of these older guns have been used as they should have been, they have history that we cannot fathom.

Lowballing such a firearm, gives the idea that the article is not a worthy buy and many ( I assume) including myself will stop buying them as we may consider them a waste of money. Never gaining value and to be gotten rid of asap before it loses any more value.

That's my 2 cents worth.

I think i got $600 for mine and it was a nice gun but your Bore sounds in Better condition so my guess would be $800 at least.
Tho right now moneys tight.

id hang onto it if i were you!

And your point is??
Gun show guys can ask a million dollars if they want but as you pointed it out already "they also carry the same gun around for months" & likely when it is sold, it's for about what it's worth not what they initially asked!

WinnipegToymaker: I think you have confused me with your "Lowballing such a firearm" comment? Are you implying values I & others here have suggested are just low-balling the gun? If so, what would possibly be the reason I would do that, I have no want for such a firearm & have sold many in that condition. My opinion is it's not worth that much but I rated it at what I thought the guy might get for it if he intended to sell it because he did say it had a " Bore is shiny and rifling looks excellent". You cannot add value because "family for 3 generations" that value is only to the family nvolved.

pics woudls tell us a lot more. different people have different views on condition from good to bad. you hear people say all the time "very nice shape for being 100 years old" to some people that could meen that it still works and thats about it. ;) need pics

I love these old guns

Yes pics help a ton but can also be decieving, I'd say he actually did a fairly good job describing the rifle. Sounds like a totally grey rifle with a little blueing near the protected areas, but with a good bore.

As far as a verbal discription goes, it was discribed well. I would still like to see pics though. (only cuz I like seeing these old winchesters)

Sorry Senior if you took offense, no offence meant or implied.....I do not ever imply anything about the members of this site, they are mostly great people and sharers of info and I cannot thank them enough. (yourself included). I did state, in "my 2 cents worth", that the fact of lowballing ( that does happen) the value has a deprimental effect on a person not in the know. I as a newbee had such an experience with a " knowledgeable" collector ...only to have a buddy buy the gun back 2 weeks later at $400 more than the buyer paid me for it. leaves a very sour taste.

The opposite is also true when a gun is so overpriced for the Canadian market, depending on what it will sell for state side to set a price.. Should,'t we be trying to keep the guns here rather than shipped south where a few dollars more can be gotten. But I like yourself can have an opinion, we do not have to agree, but thats what keeps it interesting . And I come down on no one for them stating such.

Hopefully no one takes offense as none was meant . just an opinion shared.

again my 2 cents worth.

Thanks guys, nice to hear the little screw on the front site is original, as it looks that way. I did photo it earlier today pretty thoroughly for a guy who had posted that he was looking for 100 yr old Wins. He implied he was serious for my price so I'll give him first crack at it once photos are transferred, then I'll try to paste a couple here for your interest.

WinToy, I may have understood you, yes there are people like you describe but the lack of ability to make offers & other members adding their values it kinda excludes most of them from this site. I'm sorry you had such an bad experience but I'll bet it wasn't from here. There are a few real collectors on this site that will & do give an honest values, some may not like it & think there to low, & who knows some may win a lotto when they sell their old gun but for the most part if you want an honest value on what you could sell a gun for, the guys on here are pretty good! What I have observed is quite a few honest guys that will & have given an apprasial to the best of their ability in the past have stopped because some-one with no idea will jump down their throat:(

I do totally agree on our guns going to the states  I really hate it but whats a guy to do?? Pay $2,000 for a $1,000 gun

More's the pity that the Laws are not as restricted for shipping stateside as they are coming to Canada. We cannot even get some parts for USA built guns that are sold to Canadian retailers ....."when will it stop".

Most border traffic is not Canadians shipping across, but USA buyers coming up to gun shows etc. and shipping back hundreds of our Canadian owned guns. Firearm sales are big business down there. I have visited a few of the US sites and the prices are too high for most of us and the Laws almost prevent buying any.

I do appreciate any and all info I get from the guys on here. Many have helped me and many I have helped. That is what it is about.

Thanks Gents for listening.....TM

I agree pictures can be deceiving; I think this rifle looks better in my hands!
Anyway I said I'd show you...
Thanks for your earlier comments

94 in .38-55

You have a standard condition 94 for Canada. You won't get any more money for that gun in the States, only if it was pre 1898 would there be a demand for a gun in that condition in the US. The caliber is the key factor for this gun and in the condition your gun is in $700 to $800 would be good fair price. Remember Winchester are not making them anymore

Looking at those photos, it appears that you have a good, honest gun that has never had the wood sanded or refinished, nor had a reblueing job. Putting a value on that rifle is a little more difficult. An honest rifle like this one has appeal and I would raise my previous estimate to somewhere around $700 to $800. However, I've seen similar 38-55's recently that were for sale by a dealer and his price would have been around $1,200 for a rifle in that condition. On the other hand, I sold a much higher condition Model 1894 38-55 with most of the blue still on the receiver and about 85 to 90% of the blue on the barrel for $1,200. So given that what I was willing to sell a much higher condition 38-55 model 1894 for, I would be hard pressed to pay $1,200 for one with considerably less original finish. All this to say that if it were me, I would think $700 to $800 a solid price for it, with $1,200 an upper limit if you were to buy such a rifle, in that condition, from a dealer.

Oops sorry for the duplicate posting of pics! got the hang of it now. And yes after a gentle brushing with some nitro solvent , my buddy and his LED bore light shows bore is excellent, I would say in anyone's opinion. Rifle is growing on me but I think I will post it tomorrow on EE Antiques as I didn't hear back from the fellow I originally corresponded with about it.

I do not beleive that your gun is classed as an "ANTIQUE" it has to predate 1899 and if it has a magazine (tube or detachable) it is not either. Please correct me if I am wrong.
