25-06 coyote scope decision

Disagree with me if you wish, but any mechanical part runs the possibility of failing, and the more parts that a scope has, the more prone to failure it is. Tactical scopes didn't have adjustable objectives for years; ever wonder why? The tactical scopes that have adjustable objectives now are all well over $1000.00; ever wonder why?
The weaver scopes are very clear. The 2.5-7X that I have on my rimfire is clearer than either of my Leupoulds.
Mike

Never said you needed one for hunting as you don't for the vast majority of situations but having shot a ton of AO lens scopes, I've yet to see one fail nor have I ever heard on one failing. Less to go wrong with an AO lens than there is with the magnification adjustment or the elevation and windage adjustments.

Actually, nope, I never have wondered why.

AO scopes are designed for long-range precision shooting and even if the absolute worst case scenario happened and it screwed up and stuck at a particular yardage, it would make any noticable difference in your POI at conventional hunting ranges.

Cameron,

From your description a 4-12x40mm with a fine duplex reticle would be perfect. 12x is more than enough fo the 400 yard shots and if you call 4x is perfect for the close shots. I am not sure if leupold offers this scope with a fine duplex, but it is prefferable for varmints.

As far as the adjustable objective banter;
No need for an AO for what you describe. I have AO on most of my rigs, but I find hunting/calling yotes adjusting AO is the last thing on my mind. I have mine set for about 200 yards and that is where they stay when I am out for coyotes. AO makes a difference on paper, but unless you are into the real long distance stuff out to 400 yards for a hunting rig it is not needed, and can mess you up.

FYI- My latest lightweight carry gun which I built for calling dogs has a VXIII 4.5-14x40 with no AO. I have an elevation only turret on the scope for the dogs that hang up at distance. I still like the option of more magnification if need be. This scope has a fine duplex reticle.

They don't!

4200 is a very solid scope and losing zero would be more a function of the rings and mounts rather than the scope.

So if I bought a Farrel base and some TPS rings for my 416 I could mount a $29.99 Tasco on my rifle and never worry about a scope failure again?

Wow, I guess I can sell my Leupolds off now.:rolleyes:

Ya, that's what I was saying......:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Well guys, after far too much researching and reading forums, I've cut it down to three choices:

Bushnell 4200 3x9 (Ballistic Reticle) @ $300
Bushnell 3200 4x12 Adjustable Objective @ $330
Leupold FXII 6x36 with LR Reticle @ $390

It's at this point I can't seem to make up my mind:

I like the 4200 because it is newer (so I assume it has better coatings), and because of the ballistic reticle. I don't know how fine/coarse the reticle is though, so am not sure how it would do for long range.

I like the 3200 because of the option of an AO, plus the extra power. That being said, I don't know how good the optics are compared to the 4200, and if the 12x option is worth stepping "down" in quality and up in price.

Lastly I like the Leupold because, well, it's a Leupold. (Sorta like the ford/chev arguement. Completely irrational, but it's there). I know Leupy makes decent stuff, but yes they are a bit overpriced. I like this one for the reticle, but it isn't variable.

Has anyone else noticed that buying stuff in the "low-mid" grade is really freaking hard? Buying the expensive toys was easy compared to this...

What about a Leupold Vari X1 4-12 without AO and a Long range duplex? These are about $350. It has been my experience that the simpler the better. Especially if you are out calling at -20 degrees. 12X is more than enough for any shot one would take, and the 4X is good for when they come running in close. Would make a good scope for smaller varmints as well so you could but a dent in the local gopher population as well. The leupold warranty is worth the extra$ for me, had a bad experience with bushnell when it comes to warranty.

Of those three for the application you've indicated, the 4200 seems to be a no brainer to me.

Take a look at Vortex Optics. I have switched over to them completely and I have been very impressed. I would look at either the Viper 4-12X40 PA, or the Diamondback 4-12X40. Both have great glass and are very reasonably priced. If you are interested and can't find a dealer, drop me a line and I can help you out.

Good luck in your quest!:D

Any thoughts on the VXI 4x12s?

Exactly what i have mounted on my 25 06 . I found it to be well worth the money , very clear & great eye relief . You might want to check out the EE seems so i saw one in there .
