There is a screw on the front of M14's just after stock and before the flash hider... apparently when you turn it horizontal is used to fire grenades and it apparently doesn’t eject the shell because its supposed to use all the gas to fire the grenade.

My question is can it be safely fired like this with live ammo so you don’t have to collect your brass... it’s a pain when your shooting in snow and these cases hit the snow and melt down a few feet.

I was out shooting this weekend and its a bigger pain to go seaching thru deep snow to find your brass since I dont have alot I cant aford to loose them right now.

Sometimes its too windy and I am shooting off the hood of a truck so they cases go all over the place...

It didnt stop me though from sending a bunch downrange at my frying pan...

there was another thread on this recently. A few folks tested it out to see if it would improve groupings, but it had the opposite effect and opened them up...FWIW.

there's youtube video, search suppressed m14
the smith enterprise suppressor is one of the vids and the guy cycles all of them by hand. Gas system is on though.... i think. The subsonics aren't enough to dislodge the case for extraction. pretty cool vid though.

I saw a guy at the poco range , new m14s, first time owner and first time shooting. The rifle had the gas off and he thought his gun was broken as the bolt was jammed shut. He resorted to using the heel of his running shoe to step on the oprod handle and that did the trick. :D never tried firing with the gas off...... will try it next time..... we got that same problem with snow out west right now believe it or not, first real winter since 1974/75

Turning off th gas and using the 14 as a single shot can be done,
HOWEVER,
if you want a bolt action rifle, you should get a bolt action rifle.

The semi auto M-14 does not have anywhere near the leverage required to EASILY twist a fired/expanded case out of the chamber.

That is why the bolt action rifles have those long bolt handles and spiral camming surfaces.

PS: Jumping on the op rod handle does work ...
but how tacky!!!!

And if you slip and chamber the next round .... where is your muzzle pointing??
OOPS!!

Buy a bigger drop cloth!

A friend of mine got a really good deal on a Yugo 59/66 for the same reason. The seller was really eager to sell and when my friend took it to the range he found the gas was off for grenade launching. The original owner probaly thought it wasn't working so sold it cheap thinking he was ripping the buyer off!

msg.drew...... you could always try and design some kind of brass catcher. A buddy used to have one on his sks D. Just a clip on brass catcher. wouldn't be hard to rig such a device for shootin off range when retrieving the brass matters. Might look funny.... but if it's functional, why not.

I bet you could take one of those little aquarium nets and bend the wire handle so you could fit it over your right hand, and catch the brass with your net, if you were so inclined.

Anyway I was just going to say if you do this, and you need to jump on the handle, PLEASE take the mag out first! I don't want to be reading about any range accidents!

Also, the only reason I would do this would be for measuring brass. I believe that brass ejected by an M14 is often still expanding as the action is so fast, so I think this would give you a more accurate idea of the size and shape of your chamber. Other than that...hell, I just hunt for the brass.

Are you guys sure that all this jumping on the charging handle is really needed that often? I put about twenty rounds though my M14 with the gas off (I can't remember why I was doing it right now, actually) and it was no problem at all to cycle the action by hand while sitting on the bench, with the front of the rifle resting on sandbags.

Mine came switched off right out of the box.

Then the little pin came right out, and I lost it on the ground at the range.
Now I have a paperclip in its place untill I get a new one

F*%#ing sucks!!!

CheDavera: Nice! Mine came without the little pin, I am using a finishing nail right now to keep the gas turned on. Looks tacky but works till I can remember to pickup some roll pins!
